Mohinder Amarnath Biography

Former Indian allrounder known for fearless batting against pace attacks, a key performer in India’s 1983 World Cup triumph, and recipient of national andB

Early life and background

Mohinder Amarnath was born on 24 September 1950 in Patiala, Punjab, and grew up in a cricketing household. His father, Lala Amarnath, was a former Indian Test captain who played a major role in his early development. Mohinder practised in unusual ways as a child—his father set up targets in a field so he could work on placement and taught him to take on steep bouncers instead of merely tucking them away.

He completed his schooling at MB High School, Mandir Marg, Delhi, and graduated from Khalsa College, Delhi University. His hometown is listed as Kapurthala, Punjab.

Career

Mohinder Amarnath made his Test debut for India on 24 December 1969 against Australia at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Chennai, and his One-Day International debut on 7 June 1975 against England at Lord’s. He was a right-handed batter and a right-arm medium-pace bowler who early in his career was seen as a swing bowler who could bat. Over time he established himself primarily as a batter noted for resilience against top fast-bowling attacks of the 1970s and 1980s.

He played domestic cricket for several teams including Northern Punjab, Baroda, Delhi, Punjab, Durham and Wiltshire, and made his first-class debut in the 1966–67 Moin-Ud-Dowla Trophy for Vazir Sultan Tobacco Colts. After only ten first-class matches he was selected for India at age 19, where he took important wickets in his debut Test, but then waited nearly seven years for a consistent run in the side.

Amarnath’s career featured notable comebacks. Early on he struggled to cement a place in the national team but responded with heavy domestic scoring and improved technique. He converted to a more open-chested stance and produced strong performances that rekindled his international career, including prolific runs on the 1982 Pakistan tour where he scored centuries at Lahore and Karachi and several other crucial innings.

He was an integral member of India’s 1983 World Cup winning side. In that tournament he took three important wickets in the final and contributed with the bat across the knockout matches, earning Man of the Match honours in both a semi-final and the final—an achievement shared by very few players.

Amarnath was particularly renowned for his ability to withstand hostile fast bowling. He scored his first international century at the WACA in Perth, a notoriously bouncy venue, and accumulated several centuries against the leading pacemen of his era. He enjoyed considerable success against the West Indies, scoring 600 runs in five Tests at an average above 66 during a peak period.

His international career had interruptions caused by injuries from short-pitched bowling and fluctuating form. He suffered significant head blows during tours, missed selection for some series in the early 1980s, and had to rebuild his game in domestic cricket before returning to prominence.

Records and honours

Amarnath holds several distinctive records: he is among the very small group of players to have been named Man of the Match in both a World Cup semi-final and the final of the same tournament. He is the only Indian to have been given out for handling the ball and also has dismissals for obstructing the field and hit wicket in his record—a rare combination. He was the fifth oldest player to score his first ODI hundred and finished his career with notable milestones against some of the best bowling attacks of his time.

His contributions to Indian cricket were recognised with the Arjuna Award in 1982 and the C. K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award from the BCCI in 2009. He was also named one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 1984.

Public profile

Nicknamed Jimmy, Mohinder Amarnath became known to fans for his uncompromising style and courage against pace. His favourite ground was Lord’s and he listed Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev among cricketers he admired. Off the field he enjoyed travelling. He served as a senior figure in Indian cricket long after his playing days ended and captained India in at least one ODI.

Personal life

Mohinder Amarnath is married to Inderjit Amarnath. His family includes his late father Lala Amarnath and his mother Kailash Kumari. He has brothers Surinder Amarnath, a former Test player, and Rajinder Amarnath, a former first-class player.
