Early life and backgroundMrinal Dev Kulkarni was born on 21 June 1971 in Pune, Maharashtra. Raised in a Marathi household, she is the granddaughter of noted writer Gopal Nilkanth Dandekar. Her parents were both writers; her father Vijay Deo (Dev) worked as a professor and writer and her mother Veena Dandekar Deo (Dev) is also a writer. Mrinal completed higher education in Pune, earning an MA in Linguistics from Savitribai Phule Pune University. She enrolled for doctoral research at SNDT Women’s University in Mumbai but did not complete a PhD after acting opportunities increased.
Career
Mrinal Kulkarni’s screen career began in the late 1980s. Her early television work included Marathi serials such as Swami (1987), in which she played Ramabai Peshwe, and the Hindi serial Shrikant (1987) as Abhaya Shrikant. She made her Marathi film acting debut with Maza Saubhagya (1994) and appeared in the Hindi film Kamla Ki Maut (1989).
Across television she has been a familiar face in both Marathi and Hindi programming. In Marathi productions she featured in projects including The Great Maratha (1994), Avantika (2001), and Raja Shivchatrapati (2008). In Hindi television she is known for the titular role in the children’s fantasy series Son Pari (2000) and for parts in Astitva…Ek Prem Kahani (2002), Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat (2008), and Kaali – Ek Agnipariksha (2010). For the 2009 television serial Meera she trained in Kathak under Pandit Uma Dogra.
Her filmography spans Marathi and Hindi cinema. Marathi titles include Jai Jai Maharashtra Majha (2012), Prem Mhanje Prem Mhanje Prem Asta (2013), Farzand (2018), and Pawankhind (2022). In Hindi films she has appeared in Jai Dakshineshwar Kali Maa (1996), Veer Savarkar (2001), Lekar Hum Deewana Dil (2014), and The Kashmir Files (2022). She also acted in the ZEE5 series Jeet Ki Zid (2021), playing the role of Deep’s mother.

Her directorial credits include Prem Mhanje Prem Mhanje Prem Asta (2013), Rama Madhav (2014), and Ti and Ti (2019).
