Mukesh Sahani Biography

Mukesh Sahani is an Indian politician and former film set designer from Darbhanga, Bihar. He founded the Vikassheel Insaan Party, has served as Bihar's MLC

Early life and background

Mukesh Sahani was born on 31 March 1981 in Afjala, a village in Biraul tehsil of Darbhanga district, Bihar. He grew up in a family identified with the Nishad (Mallah) community, classified as an Extremely Backward Class. His formal schooling ended after the eighth grade. In his youth he left home for Mumbai in 1999 to seek work, initially taking a job as a salesman before moving into set design for films and television.

Career

In Mumbai Sahani built a career in set design, working on high-profile projects that brought him recognition within the industry. He was involved with sets for major Hindi films and television productions, including work connected to Devdas and other projects such as Bajrangi Bhaijaan and the reality show Bigg Boss. He later became a director of several companies involved in film and event work.

Around 2008 Sahani returned to Bihar and shifted his focus toward social work. He founded Sahani Samaj Kalyan Sanstha in 2010 and opened offices in Darbhanga and Patna to address issues affecting the Nishad community, including education and demands for reservation. He organized a large rights conference for the community in February 2014 that has been described as a turning point for his grassroots activism.

Political rise

Sahani formalized his political ambitions by registering the Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) with the Election Commission of India on 26 July 2018. He launched the party publicly after a bus yatra and fielded candidates in the 2019 general elections from constituencies including Madhubani, Muzaffarpur and Khagaria. None of those candidates won in 2019.

Ahead of the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections his party initially positioned with the Mahagathbandhan but later became allied with the National Democratic Alliance. He contested the Simri Bakthiarpur assembly seat in 2020 and finished second to the Rashtriya Janata Dal candidate Yusuf Salahuddin. Following the election he was appointed Minister for Animal Husbandry and Fisheries and took oath on 16 November 2020, holding the portfolio until 27 March 2022. He also served as a Member of the Bihar Legislative Council under a BJP quota beginning in January 2021, with that term continuing until July 2022.

Throughout his political career Sahani has used high-visibility campaign methods, including a 101-day Nishad Aarakshan Sankalp Yatra launched in July 2023. That campaign made use of a specially converted rath — a Mercedes-Benz bus retrofitted with amenities such as a TV, seating, a meeting area and air conditioning — reported to have cost several crores rupees.

Public profile

Sahani has maintained a vocal public presence, frequently addressing issues of representation for the Nishad community and invoking figures connected to that constituency. He has publicly expressed aspirations for higher office, including stating ambitions to be considered for the chief ministership of Bihar. His political journey has included associations and subsequent distancing from the Bharatiya Janata Party; he was named a campaigner for the BJP during the 2014 general election before later criticizing the party for not meeting expectations regarding community reservation demands.

Controversies and legal matters

Public records list multiple court cases registered against Sahani up to October 2020, with cases reported from jurisdictions in Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Patna, Saharsa and Samastipur involving a range of charges. Incidents that drew media attention include an episode in March 2021 when he delegated a scheduled public inauguration to his brother, creating an uproar in the Bihar Legislative Assembly; he later apologized. In July 2021 he was detained and returned from Varanasi while attempting to unveil statues on the anniversary of Phoolan Devi's death, and related material was reported seized by authorities in 2022.

Personal life

Sahani is married to Kavita (also reported as Kabita) Soni. The couple have two children, a son named Ranveer and a daughter named Muskan. His mother, Meena Devi, died on 25 July 2010. His father, Jeetan (also reported as Jitan) Sahani, was killed in July 2024. He has at least two siblings: a brother, Santosh Kumar Sahani, who is also active in politics, and a sister named Rinku Sahani.

Latest updates

In February 2023 the Indian government assigned Sahani Y+ security coverage. In July 2023 he began the 101-day Nishad Aarakshan Sankalp Yatra, a campaign that included distribution of community symbols and promotional materials. He has continued to stage rallies that emphasize voter awareness and the political empowerment of the Nishad community.
