He attended local schools including Lal School and the Government Multipurpose Higher Secondary School in Sagar before going on to study at Dr. Hari Singh Gour University. He later trained at the National School of Drama in New Delhi, a foundation that prepared him for a career in stage and screen acting.

Tiwari made his film debut in 1998 with China Gate, a performance that earned him recognition early on; he received the Zee Cine Award for Most Promising Debut (Male) for that film.
