Early life and background
Honnasandra Narasimhaiah Chandrashekar, better known by his stage name Mukhyamantri Chandru, was born on 28 August 1953 in Honnasandra, Nelamangala in what is now Bangalore Rural, Karnataka. Raised in a lower‑middle‑class family, he completed his schooling at Siddaganga Matha in Tumkur and later graduated in science from Government Arts and Science College, Bangalore. After college he took a clerical job at Bangalore University while simultaneously nurturing a growing interest in theatre.

Chandru’s early exposure to stage plays in Ravindra Kalakshetra as a college student helped spark his passion for theatre. He faced financial constraints in his youth and has recounted periods when he relied on relatives and friends for shelter while studying in Bangalore.

Career
Chandru’s theatrical breakthrough came in 1978 when he was cast to play the chief minister Krishna Dwaipayana Kaushal in a Kannada play titled Mukhyamantri. He adapted and framed many of his own dialogues for the part, turning the originally serious drama toward a more comic tone. The role resonated strongly with audiences and the name of the play became his enduring nickname.

He made his film debut in 1983 with the Kannada movie Chakravyuha and went on to appear in numerous regional films. His screen credits include Mududida Tavare Aralithu, Jwaalamukhi, Guri, Avale Nanna Hendthi, Neenu Nakkare Haalu Sakkare, Sipayi, Ammavra Ganda, Karnana Sampathu, Mathadana, Manasugula Mathu Madhura, and Govindaya Namaha. Alongside his work in cinema, Chandru maintained a prolific stage presence; by January 2020 his play Mukhyamantri had completed over 700 performances across India and abroad.

Politics
Chandru entered electoral politics in 1985 when he joined the Janata Party and contested the Karnataka assembly elections from Gauribidanur. He won that contest by a margin of more than 6,600 votes. He later contested the 1989 Lok Sabha elections but was not successful. After political realignments within the Janata family, he resigned from the Janata Dal in 1990.

In 1991 Chandru joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was nominated to the Karnataka Legislative Council in 1998 and received a second nomination in 2004. In 2008 he was appointed chairperson of the Kannada Development Authority, a post he held until 2013. While leading the authority he promoted measures to protect and develop the Kannada language, including proposals around Kannada display on government vehicle registration plates and advocating for the inclusion of Kannada as a compulsory subject for early school classes.

Chandru resigned from the BJP in 2013 and joined the Indian National Congress in 2014. Most recently, on 13 July 2023 he was announced as the president of the Karnataka unit of the Aam Aadmi Party.

Public profile
Chandru is identified with theatre and language activism as well as his film and political careers. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by Gulbarga University in recognition of his contributions to Kannada theatre and his activism to preserve the Kannada language. Known for a talent in miming and a love of literature, his personal tastes include Vachana and Janapada literary traditions and comic influences such as Laurel and Hardy and Charlie Chaplin.

Personal life
Chandru married actress Padma in June 1983. The couple have two sons, Bharath and Sharath. He follows Jainism and lists reading and theatre among his hobbies. Physical details recorded in public sources list him at approximately 167 cm (about 5 feet 6 inches) with black hair and black eyes.
