Nadira Zaheer Babbar was born Shameen on 20 January 1948 in Bombay (now Mumbai), India. She grew up in a family with strong literary and political roots: her father was the late Sayed Sajjad Zaheer and her mother Razia Sajjad Zaheer. Nadira’s early education led to a Bachelor of Arts and later formal theatre training at the National School of Drama (NSD) in New Delhi, where she completed a diploma in direction in 1971.
