Nadira Mehrin Biography
Nadira Mehrin is an Indian actor, model, journalist and activist from Manacaud, Thiruvananthapuram. Recognised for becoming the first trans woman to enroll
Early life and backgroundNadira Mehrin was born on 17 September 1999 in Manacaud, Thiruvananthapuram, and grew up in a Muslim household. She became aware of a gender identity different from the one assigned at birth during her mid-teens and came out at 17. After coming out she faced family rejection and challenging circumstances that shaped her determination to continue her education and advocacy work.
She left regular schooling after class 8 following an assault and a lack of support from school authorities, then resumed studies independently until returning by class 10. Financial constraints also threatened her ability to pursue higher education; she tutored students and did modelling work to fund her studies, and received assistance from the transgender community to continue at college.
Career
Mehrin holds a B.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication and two master's degrees, one in Political Science and another in Theatre, from institutions that include A.J. College of Science & Technology, University College Thiruvananthapuram and Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kerala. She has worked as a journalist and an anchor for the 24 News channel.
As an actor, she made her film debut in Freedom Fight (2022). She also participated as a contestant on Bigg Boss Malayalam season 5 in 2023. Alongside media work, she has modelled and used public visibility to raise awareness about transgender rights and access to education.
Activism and public engagement
Mehrin has been active in student politics since school and contested the All India Students' Federation (AISF) general secretary election at University College, Thiruvananthapuram in 2018 while studying for her political science postgraduate degree. She later became the vice president of AISF in 2022. Her activism extends into community work: she has been a board member at Queerythm LGBTIQ community since 2019 and co-launched the Kaleidoscope online campaign in 2021 to support and empower transgender people across India, offering awareness and mental health resources.
Her public advocacy has addressed practical barriers trans students face, such as a lack of gender-neutral facilities and discriminatory treatment by institutions. She has also taken part in government training and served as a resource person for the Kerala government on sexual and gender minority issues, and she teaches classes on Sexual Gender Minority topics.
Public profile
In 2018 she won the Miss Trivandrum title, and in 2019 she opened a small juice stall called Aanoruthide Kulukkikada near Tagore Theatre to support herself. She has spoken publicly about incidents of discrimination she experienced while living in a women’s hostel at Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, where she described being asked to leave a hostel room late at night after requesting a functioning fan necessary for her hormone treatment.
Mehrin has spoken about systemic problems transgender people face when seeking recourse from authorities, sharing that police often failed to register complaints or sided with alleged assaulters. She has also criticised casting practices in the entertainment industry that exclude transgender actors from transgender roles.
Latest updates
In 2021 she made history in Kerala by enrolling in the government’s transgender quota for a postgraduate degree, a milestone noted in regional media. In 2022 she appeared in the film Freedom Fight, and in 2023 she was a contestant on Bigg Boss Malayalam season 5. Her ongoing work includes journalism, acting, community organising and public speaking on transgender rights and education.
