Early life and background

Nadiya Moidu was born Zareena Moidu on 24 October 1966 in Sion, Mumbai. Raised by parents N. K. Moidu and Lalitha, she attended The J. B. Vachha High School for Parsi Girls and later studied at the Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy School of Art. She holds a B.A. in Communication Arts with a focus on radio and television and pursued media management studies in the United States.

Career

Moidu made her film debut as Girly Mathew in the Malayalam movie Nokkethadhoorathu Kannum Nattu (1984). That breakthrough led to a Tamil debut in Poove Poochudava (1985), a remake of her Malayalam debut. Over the years she worked across Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu cinema, appearing in notable films such as Nilave Malare (1986), Anbulla Appa (1987), Bazaar Rowdy (1988, in a dual role), Attarintiki Daredi (2013), Drushyam (2014), Naa Peru Surya, Naa Illu India (2018) and The Warriorr (2022).

Her early work earned critical recognition: she won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Malayalam for Nokkethadhoorathu Kannum Nattu, and later received awards for supporting work including a Nandi Award and the TSR - TV9 National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for Attarintiki Daredi. She has also received nominations across Filmfare and SIIMA categories for both lead and supporting roles in Tamil and Telugu films.

After marrying in 1989, Moidu relocated to the United States but continued to accept film assignments provided shooting could be scheduled during her visits to India. During her time abroad she worked in broadcast roles, including as a news reader for an American network and later for the BBC in London following a promotion. She returned to Indian screens with M. Kumaran Son of Mahalakshmi in 2004 after a break, and subsequently continued to take character and supporting roles in South Indian films.

Television and other work

Moidu has worked on television as a host and judge. She made her hosting debut with Jackpot on Jaya TV in 2010 and later served as a judge on Malayalam shows Veruthe Alla Bharya (2015) and Comedy Stars Season 2 (2019). She has also made cameo appearances on Tamil television. Outside of acting, she has modelled for a Naam Foundation photo shoot recreating a Raja Ravi Varma painting, and has served as a brand ambassador for products including Arokya Milk and Thangamayil Jewellery.

Personal life

Moidu married Shirish Godbole in 1989. The couple lived abroad for a period before returning to Mumbai in 2007. They have two daughters, Sanam and Jana. Her family includes a sister, Haseena Moidu.
