Early life and background

Namitha Marimuthu was born on 23 February 1989 in Chennai, India. Raised in Chennai, she attended Gill Adarsh Matriculation Higher Secondary School. She later enrolled in a B.Tech in computer science at St. Peter's College of Engineering and Technology in Chennai but left the program in her final year after she fled the family home.

Namitha has described a difficult adolescence marked by conflict with her parents over her feminine identity. As a teenager she was sent to multiple rehabilitation centres and remembers escaping one such facility and walking a long distance to reach her grandparents. With support from the LGBTQ nonprofit SAHODARAN, she filed a case at the Madras High Court that led to a legal separation from her parents. After the separation, SAHODARAN also assisted Namitha with her transition to live full time as a woman.

Career

Namitha built a public profile first through modelling and beauty pageants. Early on she competed in regional contests such as Miss Kovagam in Villupuram and later won titles including Miss Trans Queen at the national level. In 2019 she represented India at Miss Trans International in Barcelona, where she earned the Miss Popular and Miss Public Favorite awards. In June 2022 she took part in Miss International Queen, the large international pageant for transgender women, held in Thailand.

Her entry into film came in 2020 when she made her acting debut in the Tamil feature Naadodigal 2, portraying Priya. Namitha has said she was drawn to the film’s portrayal of a successful trans woman and has expressed a desire to work on more projects focused on transgender empowerment.

On television, Namitha appeared as a contestant on the Tamil reality show Bigg Boss Season 5 in 2021 on Star Vijay. She left the show within a week, later citing medical reasons.

Public profile

Namitha is known for her modelling work, stage performances and public advocacy related to transgender issues. She underwent a significant weight-loss transformation earlier in her career and has spoken about losing more than 100 kg to pursue modelling opportunities. She competed in Miss Chennai and Miss Pondicherry pageants for trans women and has said those contests helped launch her pageant career.

Her activism and visibility extended to personal identification: Namitha has described receiving a transgender card in Tamil Nadu, having her name changed on her passport and having her gender listed as female on her Aadhaar card. She sees Tamil Nadu as comparatively progressive in its treatment of trans women.

Namitha has also discussed plans to write an autobiography about her transition and life experiences.

Personal details

Namitha is the only child of her parents, Marimuthu and Vennila Devi. She lists Hinduism as her religion. Physical details recorded in public profiles include a height of 185 cm (6'1"), black hair and black eyes. She has tattoos, including a butterfly on her collarbone and ink on her left arm.

She has been recognized with at least one formal award: Ooruni’s 100 Working Women Achievers Award in 2019.

Controversies

A video of Namitha walking a runway in an Ardhanarishwar-inspired look at Miss International Queen 2022 circulated online and drew criticism from some social media users who found the religious imagery inappropriate for a pageant setting. The criticism focused on the intersection of religious iconography and fashion presentation.

Latest updates

As of 2022, Namitha continues to work as a full-time actress and model and has said she is involved in multiple projects. She has indicated an ongoing interest in storytelling that highlights transgender experiences and empowerment.
