Early life and backgroundNaresh Chandra Agarwal was born on 1 October 1951 in Hardoi district, Uttar Pradesh. He completed his higher education at the University of Lucknow, where he earned a B.Sc. and an LL.B. During his university years he participated in state-level cricket and hockey competitions. He comes from a family in Hardoi; his parents are S. C. Agarwal and Shanti Agarwal.
Career
Agarwal’s political career spans several decades and multiple roles in Uttar Pradesh state politics. He first won election to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Hardoi constituency in 1980. Except for the 1985–1989 period, he represented Hardoi through seven terms from 1980 until 2012. Over the years he served in a number of ministerial posts in state governments: he was Minister of Power under administrations led by Kalyan Singh, Rajnath Singh and Ram Prakash Gupta; he held the Tourism portfolio in Mulayam Singh Yadav’s government in 2003–2004; and he served as Minister of Transport from 2004 to 2007.
Agarwal also moved to the national level. He was chosen to the Rajya Sabha in March 2010 and resigned after two years. In 2012 he again became a member of the Rajya Sabha, this time elected as a representative of the Samajwadi Party. In March 2018 he left the Samajwadi Party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.
