Naseem Shah Biography

Naseem Abbas Shah is a Pakistani fast bowler who rose from tape-ball cricket in Lower Dir to international cricket for Pakistan. Known for raw pace and key

Early life and background

Naseem Abbas Shah was born on 15 February 2003 in Mayar Jandool, Lower Dir, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. He grew up in a middle-class household and developed an early love for cricket, initially playing tape-ball cricket in his village. His family was cautious about his choice of career; his father preferred that he work abroad rather than pursue professional sport. An uncle later helped him gain formal coaching by enrolling him at the Abdul Qadir Cricket Academy in Lahore, where Sulaman Qadir provided guidance.

Naseem progressed quickly through youth cricket. By 13 he was playing for the Lahore Under-16 side, and a year later he was part of Pakistan's Under-16 setup. He completed schooling up to class 10 before focusing on a cricketing career.

Career

Naseem made his first-class debut for Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited on 1 September 2018 in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, and his List A debut followed on 16 October 2018 in the Quaid-e-Azam One Day Cup. In September 2019 he joined Central Punjab’s squad for the 2019–20 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and made his debut for the team in the National T20 Cup on 13 October 2019.

His international breakthrough came in November 2019 when he made his Test debut for Pakistan against Australia in Brisbane. He was 16 at the time and claimed David Warner as his first Test wicket. In that debut he bowled at noted pace, registering deliveries around 147 km/h in his opening over. The match came at a personal cost: his mother died a day before the debut.

Naseem continued to make an impact early in his international career. In February 2020, playing against Bangladesh, he became the youngest bowler to take a Test hat-trick. He also recorded a five-wicket haul in a Test match against Sri Lanka, becoming one of the youngest fast bowlers to take a first five-wicket haul in Test cricket. Those performances led to central contract recognition from the Pakistan Cricket Board for the 2020–2021 season and inclusion in touring squads for England.

In white-ball cricket, Naseem made his ODI debut on 16 August 2022 against the Netherlands and his T20I debut on 28 August 2022 against India. He took his first ODI five-wicket haul during the Pakistan tour of the Netherlands in 2022 and added another consecutive ODI five-for in January 2023 during the series against New Zealand. He was part of Pakistan’s squad for the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and helped the team reach the final.

Franchise and domestic cricket have also featured in Naseem’s development. He has represented Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League and appeared for St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the Caribbean Premier League, playing a notable role in the Patriots’ 2021 title by taking two key wickets in the final. Naseem was later picked up by Gloucestershire County Cricket Club as a replacement in early 2022 and was included in Welsh Fire’s squad for The Hundred in 2022. Domestic teams listed in his career include Central Punjab, Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited, Quetta Gladiators, St Kitts & Nevis Patriots, Welsh Fire, and Gloucestershire.

Public profile

Naseem bats right-handed and bowls right-arm fast. He wears jersey number 71 for Pakistan. Physically, he is listed at approximately 1.72 m (5'8") with black hair and black eyes. Off the field, he is noted for his fitness regimen and enjoys playing football in his spare time. He has cited Wasim Akram and Umar Gul among his favourite cricketers and prefers the colour green and tea as a beverage.

Personal life and family

Naseem comes from a family of seven siblings, with four brothers and two sisters. His father is Haji Muzaffar Shah; his mother passed away in 2019. One of his younger brothers, Hunain Shah, has played cricket at the Pakistan Under-19 level. Naseem is unmarried.

Community work and recognition

In response to the 2022 floods in Pakistan, Naseem auctioned the bat he used to hit two sixes against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup and donated the proceeds to relief efforts via the Shahid Afridi Foundation. In February 2023 he was appointed Goodwill Ambassador of the Balochistan Police.

Disciplinary note

Naseem was fined 10 percent of his match fee by the Pakistan Super League on 10 March 2024 for kicking stumps during a match against Multan Sultans at the Pindi Cricket Stadium.

Latest updates

As of 2024–2025, Naseem has continued to represent Pakistan across all formats and to appear for various domestic and franchise teams. Injuries have at times interrupted his availability, including a shoulder issue that ruled him out after the first match of a Test series against England in Pakistan.
