Naveen D. Padil was born on 11 November 1969 in Padil, Mangalore, Karnataka. He grew up in a Tulu-speaking household and attended Karmar School in Padil. After finishing his matriculation, financial necessity led him to take on a variety of jobs, including work as a mason, hotel supplier and a night auto-rickshaw driver, to support his family.

From a young age he was involved in drama. While still at school he was selected as a child artist at a youth drama centre run by dramatist Mohiudin Abbas. That early training led him into the local theatre circuit, where he performed with groups such as Kala Sangama, Lakumi and Chaparka.

Career

Padil built his reputation on stage before moving into films. He became a regular presence in Tulu theatrical productions, appearing in many plays over the years. His stage work includes productions with titles such as Dever Dee Leka Apundu, Nikulu Matherla Ulleratha, Yaanori Baroliya, Ardha Nidre, Initha Avaste, Onji Nimisha, Telikeda Barsolu, Oriyardori Asal and Orion Toonda Oriyagapuji.

His on-screen debut came in a supporting role in the Malayalam film Vidheyan (1993). He later played lead roles in Tulu cinema, including the film Birse (2008), and appeared in Kannada and other regional films in supporting roles, such as Jarasandha (2011). Several Tulu films that feature Padil include Aamait Asal Eemait Kusal (2012) where he portrayed Raju, Chaali Polilu (2014) as Damu, Ekka Saka (2015) as Gopal, Super Marmaye (2015) as Hari, and Kudla Cafe (2016) in which his role as Bhaskar brought wider recognition within the Tulu film industry.

Padil’s television visibility increased in 2015 when he reached a larger audience through the Kannada comedy program Majaa Talkies on Colors Kannada, performing memorable comic characters including Kotiyappa and Gundu Mava.
