Early life and background

Navjeet Kaur Dhillon was born on 6 March 1995 in Amritsar, Punjab, and grew up in the Rani Ka Bagh neighbourhood of the city. She comes from a sporting family: her father, Jaspal Singh Dhillon, was a national champion in shot put, her mother Kuldip Kaur was part of India’s silver-medal hockey team at the 1986 Asian Games, and her elder brother Jasdip (also known as Jesse Dhillon) competed in track and field before joining the Punjab police. Navjeet attended Sri Guru Harkrishan Sr. Sec. Public School and later studied at Khalsa College for Women in Amritsar.

She began training in throwing events under the guidance of her father and brother. As a child and teenager she established herself on the national scene, setting U-14 and U-16 national records in discus in 2008 and 2009 and winning national medals from an early age.

Career

Dhillon progressed through junior ranks into international competition, making her global debut at the 2011 World Youth Championships. She won her first international medal as a teenager and in 2014 became one of the few Indians to reach the World U20 Championships podium, taking bronze in the discus. That same period saw her set a national junior shot put mark of 15.89 m at the Junior Federation Cup.

In senior competition Dhillon has competed in both shot put and discus. At the 2013 Asian Athletics Championships she contested both events, finishing in the top 10 in each. Her senior résumé includes a bronze medal in the discus at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and a gold at the 2019 South Asian Games in discus with a throw of 49.87 m. She has recorded several notable domestic and international results over the years, including throws of 55.42 m at the 2019 National Inter State Senior Athletics Championships in Lucknow and 55.67 m at the 2022 edition in Chennai. In 2022 she threw 56.24 m at the Qosanov Memorial and 58.03 m at the Indian Grand Prix in Bhubaneswar.

Her medal list across shot put and discus spans junior and senior competitions: national junior golds in both events, medals at Asian junior championships, a World U20 bronze, and podium finishes at national championships and Federation Cup meets. She has also finished on the podium at Commonwealth Youth and senior Commonwealth Games competitions.

Alongside athletics, Dhillon has worked in public service. She was employed by Indian Railways as a junior clerk in Amritsar before moving to a role as an income tax inspector.

Navjeet has received recognition from her home state for her achievements. In 2015 she was awarded a government cash prize from Punjab, and after her 2018 Commonwealth Games bronze she was granted a state-level award. She is a recipient of the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Award.
