Early life and backgroundMohammed Nawab Malik was born on 20 June 1959 in Dhuswa village of Utraula Tehsil in Balrampur district, in eastern Uttar Pradesh. His family moved to Mumbai in 1970. His father, Haji Malik Mohammed Islam, worked as a ragpicker when the family arrived in the city and later built a scrap business. Malik attended Noor Baug Municipal School and Anjuman Islam High School in Mumbai and later enrolled at Burhani College. He completed schooling up to the 12th grade and began a Bachelor of Arts degree, which he did not complete.
Career
Malik entered public life through student and youth activism in Mumbai. He became involved in politics after participating in a university protest in 1979 and initially worked with the youth wing of the Indian National Congress. After the death of Sanjay Gandhi, Malik associated with the Sanjay Vichar Manch and stood as its candidate in the 1984 Lok Sabha elections from Mumbai North-East.
He joined the Samajwadi Party in the mid-1990s. Malik contested the Nehrunagar Assembly seat several times: he lost in 1995, won a 1996 by-election, and was re-elected in 1999. During this period he became part of the state government and was appointed a minister of state when the Samajwadi Party joined the Congress–NCP coalition.
Malik later moved to the Nationalist Congress Party in 2001. Over the next two decades he served multiple terms in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from Nehrunagar and, later, Anushakti Nagar. He has held cabinet responsibilities in the Maharashtra government, including housing and labour portfolios. He served as Labour Minister on two occasions and headed the Ministry of Labour at different times between 2004 and 2009. In 2012 he was appointed national spokesperson of the NCP, and in 2019 he became the Mumbai president of the party.
In the 2000s Malik faced formal accusations relating to alleged corrupt practices connected to a housing reconstruction matter; a commission set up to investigate submitted a report in 2005 and he resigned from a ministerial position at that time. He returned to ministerial duties later and continued to compete in state elections: he won the Anushakti Nagar seat in 2009, lost it in 2014, and regained it in 2019. From December 2019 until March 2022 he was minister in charge of Minority Development and Aukaf as well as Skill Development and Entrepreneurship in the Maharashtra government.
Public profile
Malik is married to Mehjabin Malik. The couple have four children: two sons, Faraz Malik and Aamir Malik, and two daughters, Nilofer Malik and Sana Malik Shaikh. Nilofer Malik is married to Sameer Shabbir Khan. Malik’s family includes siblings active in public life: his brother Abdul Rashid Kaptan Malik has served as a municipal councillor, and his sister Saeeda Khan is identified as a doctor, politician and activist. His father Haji Malik Mohammed Islam died on 5 March 2015.
Throughout his political career Malik has been a prominent NCP leader in Mumbai and a visible spokesperson for his party. He owns a range of movable and immovable assets that were declared in his public affidavits, including bank deposits, shares, vehicles and real estate. MyNeta records list a variety of those assets and an estimated net worth figure as of 2019.
Controversies and legal matters
Malik’s public life has included several controversies and legal confrontations. In 2003 a commission probe into allegations by an activist led to a report that prompted his resignation from a ministerial post. In later years he was involved in disputes with other political figures, and in January 2021 he became embroiled in a dispute with a former NCB officer after his son-in-law was arrested in an alleged drugs case; the Bombay High Court later directed him to refrain from certain public statements in that matter.
In February 2022 the Enforcement Directorate arrested Malik in a money‑laundering investigation linked to a land transaction. The agency alleged the purchase involved property connected to an individual related to an organized crime figure and raised questions about the transaction’s circumstances. In August 2023 the Supreme Court granted him interim medical bail for two months after an extended custodial period.
