Nayantara Sahgal Biography

Nayantara Sahgal is an Indian writer, journalist and political commentator from the Nehru family. Born in Allahabad in 1927, her work blends personal recol

Early life and background

Nayantara Sahgal was born on 10 May 1927 in Allahabad, then part of British India. She grew up in a family deeply involved in public life: her father was Ranjit Sitaram Pandit and her mother was Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit. As a child she spent time at Anand Bhawan and was raised alongside members of the Nehru family; Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi figure in her early years. Sahgal attended boarding school and later studied at Wellesley College in the United States, where she completed a bachelor’s degree.

Career

Sahgal built a literary and public-facing career as a novelist, journalist and political commentator. Her fiction and nonfiction frequently draw on personal experience and the political history she grew up within. She served for nearly fourteen years as a political columnist with the Sunday Standard and has been described as an outspoken critic on matters of public policy and civil liberties.

Her writing has been recognised with a number of honours. The novel Rich Like Us won the Sinclair Prize in Britain (1985) and the Sahitya Akademi Award (1986). Plans for Departure received the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for the Eurasia region in 1987. Academic institutions have also acknowledged her contributions: she was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Leeds in 1997 and received the Alumna Achievement Award from Wellesley College in 2002. In the United States she was a Fellow at the National Humanities Center (1983–84) and at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.

Sahgal’s interests in public life extended beyond writing. She has served as Vice President of the People’s Union for Civil Liberties and has undertaken work as a political commentator for outlets such as The Caravan.

Personal life

Sahgal has been married twice. Her first marriage, to Gautam Sahgal, took place on 2 January 1949; the couple later divorced in 1967. She married Edward Nirmal Mangat Rai in 1979; he remained her husband until his death in 2003. She is a mother to three children: a son, Ranjit Sahgal, and two daughters, Nonika Sahgal and Gita Sahgal. Sahgal is a widow.

Her large extended family includes well-known political figures. Her mother was the first Indian woman to hold a Cabinet post before independence and to serve as an ambassador to the United Nations. Sahgal has described Jawaharlal Nehru as a father figure after the death of her own father. She has familial ties to Indira Gandhi as well.

Public profile

Nayantara Sahgal is known for taking strong public positions. In 2015 she returned the Sahitya Akademi Award in protest, stating the act was in memory of writers who had been killed and in defence of the right to dissent. She has publicly criticised the Emergency declared in India from 1975 to 1977, a stance that strained her relationship with Indira Gandhi at the time.

Sahgal has written about religion, identity and the political movements that shape the country; she has expressed concern about Hindutva and has said she chose not to adopt a single religious identity after independence. Her literary output often interweaves family memory, political imprisonment of her parents during British rule and wider questions about democracy and civil liberties. Her first book drew its title from a childhood memory when her mother gave her a chocolate cake after her father was arrested.

Later work and recognition

Beyond awards for specific books, Sahgal’s career includes publications that reveal personal correspondence and relationships. Her book Relationship published letters exchanged with E. N. Mangat Rai. A biography of Sahgal, Out of Line by Ritu Menon, has explored her personal, political and literary life.
