Early life and background

Neal Mohan was born in Lucknow, India, and spent parts of his early childhood in Michigan before his family returned to India in 1985. He completed his secondary education at St. Francis' College in Hazratganj, Lucknow, where he earned recognition via the National Talent Search Examination scholarship. Mohan is the son of Dr. Aditya Mohan and Dr. Deepa Mohan and has two brothers.

Education

Mohan studied electrical engineering for his undergraduate degree and later earned an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. While at Stanford he was active in the engineering honor society and received the Arjay Miller Scholars Award at graduation, an honor given to the top ten percent of the business school class.

Career

Mohan began his professional career at Accenture in August 1996 as a senior analyst. After about sixteen months he moved to the startup Net Gravity as a customer support representative; Net Gravity was acquired by DoubleClick in November 1997. At DoubleClick he rose through client services and operations roles to become vice president of business operations, and later returned after graduate school as senior vice president of strategy and product management.

Following Google’s acquisition of DoubleClick in 2007, Mohan transitioned to Google in 2008 as a senior vice president overseeing display and video advertising. During his time at Google he contributed to the growth of display and video ad products, participated in acquisitions of advertising-related startups, and worked on Google’s publisher-facing advertising products.

In November 2015 Mohan joined YouTube as chief product officer. In that role he led product work that resulted in new consumer offerings and services for the platform, including YouTube Music, YouTube TV, YouTube Premium, and YouTube Shorts, and he took leadership responsibility for product, user experience, and trust and safety efforts.

Mohan served on several industry and corporate boards while at Google and YouTube. His board roles have included the Interactive Advertising Bureau (2012–2016), the Mobile Marketing Association (2012–2015), 23andMe (from July 2017), and Stitch Fix (from October 2020). He also served on the management board at the Stanford Graduate School of Business from 2013 to 2017 and joined the Council on Foreign Relations in February 2022.

On February 16, 2023, following the resignation of Susan Wojcicki, Neal Mohan was announced as the chief executive officer of YouTube.
