Neeraj Shridhar was born on 23 June 1978 in Jalandhar, Punjab. He spent his childhood in a musical household where his parents encouraged singing and instrumental practice. At an early age he learned percussion and guitar and devoted long hours to playing. In 1992, when he was about 14, his family moved him to Stockholm, Sweden, where he continued to develop as a musician and began performing with local bands.

Career

In Sweden Neeraj co-founded the group Bombay Vikings in 1994 alongside Swedish musicians including Oscar Söderberg and Mats Nordenborg. He served as the band's lead vocalist and backing guitarist while the lineup expanded to include keyboardists, a drummer, a bassist and a lead guitarist. The band blended Indian melodies with Western pop and rock influences and performed live across Sweden and Norway.

After several lineup changes, Neeraj retained the Bombay Vikings name and carried the project forward. He released his debut album, Kya Soorat Hai, in 1999 through Sony BMG in India. The record consisted of reinterpretations of older Indian songs with a pronounced Western influence; its commercial reception opened opportunities for similar cross-cultural productions in the Indian market.

Bombay Vikings continued to release albums in the following years. Neeraj recorded Woh Chali in 2000, an album that garnered attention within the Indian music community. In 2002 the group released Hawa Mein Udati Jaaye, featuring guest singers including Linnea Spores and Falguni Pathak. Another Bombay Vikings album, Chhod Do Aanchal, followed in 2004.
