Neha Tanwar Biography

Neha Tanwar is an Indian former women’s cricketer who played as a right-handed opening batter and occasional off-break bowler. Rising from Naraina village,

Early life and background

Neha Tanwar was born on 11 August 1986 in Naraina village, New Delhi. She attended MCL Saraswati Bal Mandir Senior Secondary School in Hari Nagar and went on to study at Maitreyi College, graduating with a B.Com in 2006. Sport was a constant presence in her childhood: she took part in a variety of athletics and team games before shifting focus to cricket during a college sports trial in 2003. That unexpected turn introduced her to competitive cricket and set the stage for her later career.

Career

Tanwar developed through the college and university ranks into state-level cricket, representing Delhi Women and later playing for Indian Railways and India Red Women in domestic competitions. Listed as a right-handed batter who also bowled right-arm offbreak, she became known for powerful hitting and was used as an opening batswoman in many of her teams. Her preferred shot was the inside-out drive.

A strong showing in the 2010–11 Challenger Trophy opened the door to international selection. Neha made her One-Day International debut for India on 18 January 2011 against the West Indies in Rajkot. She made her T20 International debut on 26 June 2011 against England at Taunton. She wore jersey number 40 while representing India.

Between January and July 2011 Tanwar played a handful of international matches — five ODIs and two T20Is — before returning to focus on domestic cricket. She continued competing in Ranji Trophy seasons and other domestic competitions for several years after her initial international appearances.

Personal life and comeback

Tanwar married Rituraj on 9 February 2011, a month after making her international debut. The couple have a son named Shlok. In early 2014 she announced her pregnancy and subsequently stepped away from cricket; she gave birth in October 2014. Determined to return to the sport, she undertook serious fitness and training work to regain form and lose the weight she had gained during pregnancy.

She returned to competitive cricket for the 2015–16 Ranji Trophy season and continued working on her batting. Improved performances in the 2016–17 Ranji season contributed to a call-up to play against a Bangladesh-A side in 2020. Neha is noted among the few female cricketers who have returned to professional play after becoming a mother.

Public profile

Outside the playing field, Tanwar has been employed by Indian Railways. She has appeared on cricket talk platforms and television programs discussing the game; in 2020 she featured on a podcast episode of “Cricket With Queens” and joined the ABP News cricket discussion show “Wah Cricket.” On social media she has shared updates about her participation in cricket-related broadcasts.

Neha has also spoken publicly about her journey back to fitness and form after pregnancy, describing the mental and physical discipline it took to make a professional comeback. Teammates and roommates from her playing days recall her passion for cricket, including amusing anecdotes that reflect how central the sport has been to her life.

Latest updates

In 2020 Tanwar returned to the national cricket conversation by participating in media programs and by representing a side in fixtures against Bangladesh-A. She continues to be associated with domestic cricket and public cricketing discussions while working with Indian Railways.
