Early life and backgroundNikhil N. Patel was born in London in 1979 and spent parts of his childhood in Wales with his grandparents. His parents left East Africa in 1972 and settled in the United Kingdom as refugees. He attended school in Crawley before earning a Bachelor of Science (Hons.) in Business Information Systems and Laws from Middlesex University London.
Career
Patel’s professional life spans roles in technology, telecommunications, and financial services across Europe, North America, Asia and Africa. Early in his career he worked in Frankfurt for a digital agency where he consulted on mobile technology projects for multinational clients. He then moved to New York, joining an Italian beverage group where he progressed from Director of Strategy and Development to Managing Partner and advised hospitality groups on commercial deals.
In the New York area he later served as Director of Business Development for a pharmaceutical firm, working on strategic partnerships and large‑account negotiations. In 2011 he relocated to Johannesburg and became Chief Operating Officer of an African mobile devices brand; he was later promoted to Managing Director and charged with establishing a Nairobi headquarters and expanding operations across more than 20 African markets.
