Nikita Dutta was born on 13 November 1990 in New Delhi and grew up in a family with a defence background. Her father, Anil Kumar Dutta, served in the Indian Navy; a paternal uncle has been a Major General in the Indian Army. Because of her family's service postings, she spent parts of her childhood in cities such as Visakhapatnam, Kochi, Mumbai and Delhi.

Dutta completed her college education at St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, earning a degree in Economics. While still a student she worked as an intern at an advertising agency and later began working in television as an anchor for a music request show on Zoom TV. She was also among the top 20 finalists in the Pantaloons Femina Miss India 2012 pageant.

Nikita transitioned from anchoring into acting and modelling. Her first Hindi film appearance came in 2014, when she debuted in Lekar Hum Deewana Dil.
