Nirmal Purja Biography
Nirmal “Nims” Purja is a British-Nepali mountaineer and former Gurkha and British special forces soldier who gained global attention for rapid ascents of 8
Early life and backgroundNirmal Purja was born on 25 July 1983 in Dana, Myagdi, Nepal, and grew up in Chitwan and Kathmandu. He attended Small Heaven School in Bharatpur before pursuing further education in the United Kingdom, earning a post-graduate diploma in Security and Risk Management from Loughborough University (2012–2014). He is of Magar ethnicity and practices Hinduism.
His family background is rooted in military service and farming: his father served in the Gurkha army and his mother worked as a farmer. Purja has three older brothers who also served as soldiers in the Gurkha army and one sister. He married Suchi Purja in 2006; she is a dental therapist and a director at Mountain Philanthropy Limited in Eastleigh, Hampshire.
Career
Purja joined the Gurkha army at age 18, fulfilling a childhood ambition. After nearly six years with the Gurkhas he moved to the United Kingdom and joined the Special Boat Service (SBS) as a cold-weather warfare specialist, becoming the first Gurkha to join the SBS. He later joined the Special Air Service (SAS) in 2018.
While serving in the military he developed a serious interest in high-altitude mountaineering. He first trekked to Everest Base Camp in 2012 and went on to climb peaks including Lobuche East and Dhaulagiri. Over the next several years he led and participated in multiple expeditions, including leading 13 Gurkhas to Everest during the G200E expedition in 2017, commemorating 200 years of Gurkha service in the British Army.
Purja’s profile rose sharply with Project Possible, an effort to climb all fourteen 8,000-metre peaks in a drastically shortened timeframe. In 2019 he completed the fourteen 8,000-metre summits using supplemental oxygen in six months and six days, breaking the previous multi-year standard. That year he also recorded a series of speed-climbing achievements: the fastest consecutive ascents of Everest, Lhotse and Makalu within 48 hours; the fastest time from Everest summit to Lhotse summit; and multiple other Guinness World Records for rapid consecutive summits.
His 2019 campaign included summits of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Kanchenjunga, Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and later the Pakistani peaks Nanga Parbat, Gasherbrum I and II, K2 and Broad Peak. He completed Shishapangma on 1 October 2019 with permission from Chinese authorities. His expedition work also involved leading rescue missions at high altitude.
On 9 June 2018 he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of his high-altitude mountaineering achievements.
Public profile
Purja has been candid about the sacrifices behind his projects. To fund his ambitions he used personal resources, crowd-funding and sold property in Britain to raise money for expeditions. A photograph he took in May 2019 showing severe overcrowding on Everest drew wide media attention and was published internationally; he explained the image as documentation of how a narrow weather window concentrated many summit attempts into a single day.
He maintains a public presence through social media and has a tattoo on his back that he has said commemorates his fourteen 8,000-metre summits. Purja has spoken publicly about the lessons the mountains teach—humility, self-honesty and testing personal limits—and about the discipline developed through sport and military service.
Publications and film
Purja published his autobiography, Beyond Possible: One Soldier, Fourteen Peaks—My Life in the Death Zone, in 2020. His 2019 expedition and its broader story were later the subject of a Netflix documentary, 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible, released on 29 November 2021.
Latest updates
In January 2021 Purja completed a K2 expedition with nine other Nepali mountaineers; he was the only member of that team to summit without supplemental oxygen. He serves as a director at Mountain Philanthropy Limited in Eastleigh, Hampshire. His public commentary and media appearances continue to center on high-altitude climbing, expedition logistics and the human dimensions of extreme mountaineering.
