Early life and background

Nisith Pramanik was born on 17 January 1986 in Dinhata in the Cooch Behar district of West Bengal. Raised in a family with roots in both the Koch Rajbongshi community (through his mother) and the Dalit community (through his father), he attended local schooling at Bhetaguri Lal Bahadur Shastri Vidyapith in Bhetaguri. His early work included a period as a primary school teacher at Balakura Junior Basic School in Cooch Behar.

Career

Pramanik entered electoral politics with the All India Trinamool Congress and won the Cooch Behar Lok Sabha seat in May 2019. After breaking with TMC, he formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party at the end of February 2019. His 2019 Lok Sabha victory was notable for a large margin; senior leaders in his new party took notice of the result.

Following his first term as a Member of Parliament, Pramanik was elevated to the Union Council of Ministers. In July 2021 he took oath as Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports and Minister of State for Home Affairs, becoming the youngest minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Council of Ministers at age 35 and the first central minister from Cooch Behar.

At the state level, he briefly served as a member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from the Dinhata constituency in May 2021. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections he contested the Cooch Behar seat but was defeated by a margin of 39,250 votes.

Public profile

Pramanik's public image reflects both his rapid rise and contested aspects of his record. He is associated with two major West Bengal political formations—initially TMC and later BJP—and has been visible on the national stage through his ministerial roles. Physical details provided in public records list his height at approximately 5 feet 6 inches with black hair and black eyes.

Questions have been raised in the public domain about the education information shown in different official profiles; electoral affidavits list his highest formal qualification around the secondary level, while other profiles have recorded a bachelor's degree in computer applications. His declared assets and liabilities filed with election authorities show a mix of movable and immovable holdings, and a net worth estimate is recorded from 2019 figures.

Personal life

Pramanik is married to Priyanka Pramanik; the couple have two sons, Debanjan and Nilanjan. His parents are Bidhu Bhushan Pramanik and Chhanda Pramanik. Outside politics he enjoys music, sketching and playing football and cricket with his sons and friends.

Latest updates

His most recent electoral contest was the 2024 Lok Sabha race in Cooch Behar, where he lost by 39,250 votes. Earlier, in 2021, he served a short term as a state legislator before joining the Union ministry in July 2021. The ministerial appointments made him the youngest member of the Union Council of Ministers at that time and the first person from his home district to hold a central ministerial post.

Career highlights

Pramanik's trajectory includes winning a Lok Sabha seat in 2019, switching parties from TMC to BJP in early 2019, becoming a Union Minister of State in 2021, and serving as both Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports and Minister of State for Home Affairs.

Public record and controversies

Public records note several pending criminal cases listed against him in various filings, and public debate has followed discrepancies noted between different profiles about his educational qualifications. These matters have been part of media and political scrutiny.
