He is the younger son of Narayan Tatya Rane and Neelam Narayan Rane and grew up in Mumbai with his elder brother Nilesh. After completing his schooling, he pursued higher studies abroad and earned an MBA from Middlesex University, London in 2006.

After returning to Mumbai in 2006, Rane established an organisation called Swabhiman Sanghatana. The group concentrated on local issues such as unemployment, health services and basic infrastructure.
