Nitin Jairam Gadkari was born on 27 May 1957 in Nagpur, then part of Bombay State (now in Maharashtra). He grew up in Nagpur; his father, Jairam Ramchandra Gadkari, worked as a farmer. Gadkari completed higher education at the University of Nagpur, earning an M.Com and an LLB, and he also holds a diploma in business management. He is identified with Hinduism and is described as belonging to the Deshastha (Marathi) Brahmin community.

Career

Gadkari’s political involvement began in student and youth organisations. He joined the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in 1976 and served as the organisation’s Vidarbha secretary in 1978. He moved into the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) and became its city president in 1981. His legislative career advanced when he was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Council from a graduates’ constituency in 1990.

Within the Maharashtra government, Gadkari served as Public Works Department (PWD) Minister between 1995 and 1999. He retained his Legislative Council seat through subsequent elections in 1996, 2002 and 2008. The BJP made him state unit president in 2004, and he later rose to national party leadership, taking over as Bharatiya Janata Party president in December 2009 and serving until January 2013.

At the national level, Gadkari was elected to the Lok Sabha from Nagpur in 2014. He was appointed Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways that year. In September 2017 he was additionally given responsibility for the Ministries of Shipping and of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation. After the 2019 general election he retained the Road Transport and Highways portfolio and also held the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. He won the Nagpur Lok Sabha seat again in 2019 with a substantial margin and retained it in the 2024 general election, winning the constituency for a third successive term.
