Early life and backgroundNyra Banerjee was born Madhuurima Banerjee on 14 May 1987 in Mumbai, where she was raised and continues to have her hometown. She studied at Canossa Convent High School before earning a law degree (B.L.S., LLB) from SVKM’s Pravin Gandhi College of Law, with a specialization in intellectual property rights. Nyra grew up in a household that encouraged music and dance; she learned classical music and ghazals from her mother and studied Kathak for a period. Her father served in the Indian Navy and her mother is a writer and painter.
She began performing at a young age, recording children’s songs and taking part in school and college stage activities. Director G. V. Iyer discovered her as a teenager while she was singing at a recording studio and cast her in his Hindi television series Kadambari, where she played Mahalaxmi. Around the same time she started getting film offers and worked part‑time as a TV anchor during her final school year.
Career
Nyra’s film debut credits span multiple languages: Telugu (Aa Okkadu, 2009), Hindi (Toss: A Flip of Destiny, 2009) and later appearances in Kannada, Malayalam and Tamil films. Early Telugu roles include performances in Orange (2010) and the comedy Saradaga Kasepu (2010), in which she became known for playing Manimala. She continued in Telugu cinema with Shadow (2013), Kotha Janta (2014) and a role in the commercially notable Temper (2015).
Her Tamil work includes Aambala (2015) and the romantic musical Serndhu Polama (2015). In Malayalam she appeared in Koothara (2014). Nyra has also acted in Kannada films such as Savaari 2 (2014), Supari Surya (2015) and Tiger (2017).
In Hindi cinema she appeared in Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal (2012) and later played Simran Raisingh in One Night Stand (2016), a role that increased her visibility in Bollywood. Beyond films, she assisted a director on the Hindi biographical sports drama Azhar and began using the stage name Nyra professionally in 2016.
Television and digital projects have formed a substantial part of Nyra’s career. She played the lead role of Divya in the supernatural series Divya Drishti (2019) and appeared in the digital sitcom Zaban Sambhal Ke (2018) for ALTBalaji. Other TV roles include Mithu in Excuse Me Maadam (2020) and Chakori Singh Thakur in Rakshabandhan… Rasal Apne Bhai Ki Dhal (2021–2022). In 2023 she gained attention for portraying Raat Rani/Rani Singh Rajput in the Colors TV supernatural drama Pishachini. That same year she participated in the reality stunt series Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi 13 and appeared in the action thriller series Operation Cobra on Eros Now.
