Padma Subrahmanyam Biography
Padma Subrahmanyam is an Indian classical dancer, scholar, teacher and choreographer celebrated for her work in Bharatanatyam and for developing the Bharta
Early life and backgroundPadma Subrahmanyam was born on 4 February 1943 in Chennai (then Madras Presidency). She grew up in a family steeped in the arts: her father, Krishnaswami Subrahmanyam, founded the Nrithyodaya Dance School and was active in filmmaking and public life, while her mother, Meenakshi Subrahmanyam, was a composer, Sanskrit lyricist and instrumentalist. Padma began formal training in dance and music at the Nrithyodaya Dance School under the teacher Kausalya and later continued studies with Vazhuvoor Ramaiah Pillai.
She completed higher education in Chennai, attending Ethiraj College for Women and later Annamalai University. Her academic credentials include a bachelor’s degree in music, a master’s degree in ethnomusicology and a doctoral thesis focused on the 108 Karanas in Indian dance and sculpture, a study carried out under the guidance of archaeologist Dr. T. N. Ramachandran.
Career
Padma Subrahmanyam developed a career that spans performance, choreography, scholarship and teaching. Trained in traditional Bharatanatyam, she also studied adavus (basic steps) with K. N. Dhandayudapani Pillai and abhinaya (expression) with Gowri Ammal. Her music teachers included B. V. Lakshmanan and Salil Chowdhury. She made her on-stage debut (Arangetram) in 1956 and went on to present a wide repertoire of solo and ensemble works.
Her scholarship began when assisting her brother with research on temple architecture and sculpture; encountering karana sculptures inspired her doctoral work. By examining literature, inscriptions and temple sculptures in sites such as Chidambaram, Thanjavur and Kumbakonam, she reconstructed the 108 Karanas as dynamic movements rather than static poses. This research informed both her teaching and choreographic practice and led her to articulate links between the Natya Shastra and living dance traditions.
Padma created an approach sometimes described as Bharata Nrithyam and expanded the technical vocabulary of her performances to use the whole body, incorporating expansive jumps, extended leg work and brisk footwork to realise complex rhythmic patterns. Her choreographic output includes classical dance-dramas and mono-acting works: Meenakshi Kalyanam, Viralimalai Kuravanji, Valli Kalyanam, Silappadikaram, Krishna Tulabaram, Parijata Aharanam, Nagarukku Appal, Geetanjali, Shyama, Sri Gurave Namaha, Pavai Nombu and a special Vande Mataram performance marking India’s Golden Jubilee, among others. She also revived the Banika style of mono-acting with pieces such as Krishnaya Tubhyam Namaha, Ramaya Tubhyam Namaha and Jaya Jaya Sankara.
As a vocalist, Padma has performed in multiple languages and recorded several albums in collaboration with her sister-in-law Shyamala Balakrishnan. Titles associated with her vocal work include Folk Music of Tamilnadu, Krishna Tulabharam, Nritya Margam, Natana Sivanjali, Saivappamalai and Gita Govindam, the latter featuring renditions of Jayadeva’s Ashtapadis. She has also provided vocal accompaniment for many of her disciples’ performances.

Her other recognitions include national and international awards, honorary doctorates and fellowships, and lifetime achievement citations from cultural organisations across India and abroad. She has been named Asthana Vidushi by significant temples and cultural institutions, and has been honoured with prizes such as the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Kalaimamani and the Fukuoka Asian Cultural Prize.
Padma’s artistic practice extends into pedagogy and dissemination: she teaches workshops and conducts camps, and is known for her attention to costume, hair and jewellery design that complement the reconstructed karana movements. Her work connects field research, performance and teaching, positioning her as both a practising artist and a scholar-practitioner.
