Palwankar Baloo Biography
Palwankar Baloo was an influential Indian left-arm orthodox spin bowler from the early 20th century, remembered for his bowling for the Hindus team, his 19
Early life and backgroundBabaji Palwankar Baloo was born on 19 March 1876 in Dharwad, in what is now Karnataka, India. His family name derived from the village Palwan. His father worked in the army and Baloo spent his early years around Pune (then Poona), where he found work caring for cricket grounds. He earned a modest wage maintaining playing surfaces and setting up practice nets at local clubs.
Career
Baloo developed into a specialist left-arm orthodox spin bowler. He began working at clubs in Poona, first tending the pitch at a Parsi club and later at the Poona Club for Europeans, where he built practice nets and maintained the grounds. Encouraged by European club members to bowl in the nets, his slow left-arm style drew attention from visiting cricketers and club captains.
His performances in club practice led to first-class opportunities. He made his first-class debut on 8 February 1906 in the Hindus versus Europeans fixture and went on to represent the Hindus between 1905 and 1921. He also played for the Maharaja of Patiala's All India Team. Across the 1905/06 to 1920/21 period he recorded 179 wickets at an average of 15.21. On the 1911 tour of England he took 114 wickets at an average of 18.84.
Baloo was part of notable early Bombay Presidency matches: he played in the celebrated 1906 and 1907 fixtures in which the Hindus defeated the Europeans by substantial margins. He served as one of the leading Indian bowlers of his era and is recognized as the first prominent Dalit cricketer in top-level Indian cricket.
Public profile
Baloo's career unfolded against a backdrop of social barriers. As a member of the Dalit caste, he faced discrimination and at times lacked selection opportunities despite strong performances. His family included several cricketers: his brothers Babaji Palwankar Shivram, Palwankar Ganpat and Palwankar Vithal were also players, with Vithal achieving distinction as captain of the Hindu team.
Beyond cricket, Baloo engaged in public life and politics later in his career. He embraced Gandhian ideas and supported efforts for Home Rule. In October 1933 he stood unsuccessfully for a Bombay municipal seat on a Hindu Mahasabha ticket. In 1937 he contested the Scheduled Caste seat in the Bombay Legislative Assembly, facing B. R. Ambedkar and losing by a narrow margin.
Personal life
Baloo was married and had at least one son, Y. B. Palwankar. He practiced Hinduism and spent much of his adult life in Pune and later Bombay (Mumbai), where he passed away on 4 July 1955 at the age of 79.
Legacy
Baloo's rise from ground staff to a leading bowler helped challenge class and caste assumptions within early Indian cricket. His bowling performances, including success on the 1911 England tour and in high-profile matches at home, secured his place in cricket history. He was a contemporary and acquaintance of figures who shaped modern India; over time his relationship with some peers evolved as political differences emerged.
