Early life and backgroundPankaj Kapur was born on 29 May 1954 in Ludhiana, Punjab. He grew up in the city and attended Kundan Vidya Mandir School before taking a pre-engineering course at Arya College in Ludhiana. While still young he showed a strong interest in performance, participating in acting competitions at school and college and developing an early talent for mimicry.
After deciding to pursue acting, Kapur enrolled at the National School of Drama in New Delhi, where he graduated with top honours and worked with the NSD Repertory Company. His theatre foundations include performances in a range of Hindi plays such as Sahabji Biwiji Ghulamji, Albert's Bridge, Panchvan Savaar, Kanak Di Balli, Drishtanth and Tughlaq.
Career
Kapur's screen career began with small film roles in the early 1980s. He appeared in the Hindi film Hari Hondal Bargadar: Share Cropper (1981) and later worked in regional cinema, including the Punjabi film Marhi Da Deeva (1989) and the Tamil film Roja (1992). He was part of the international film Gandhi (1982), which helped open more opportunities in Hindi cinema.
On television, Kapur became widely known for roles such as the titular detective in the first season of Karamchand (1985) and for his comic portrayal of Musaddi Lal in the satirical series Office Office (2000), which aired on SAB TV and earned him multiple television awards. Other notable TV credits include Mungerilal Ke Haseen Sapne (1989), Neem Ka Ped (1991), Zabaan Sambhalke (1993), Mohandas B.A.L.L.B. (1997) and Naya Office Office (2006).
