Parshottam Khodabhai Rupala was born on 1 October 1954 in Amreli, Gujarat. He completed a Bachelor of Science from Saurashtra University in 1976 and followed that with a B.Ed. from Gujarat University in 1977. He belongs to the Patidar community and lists interests that include reading, travel, listening to folk songs and participation in sports; during his student years he was part of the Saurashtra University kabaddi champion team.

Career

Rupala built a career that has combined public service at the local level with sustained involvement in party organisation and legislative politics. Early in his working life he served in education, working from 1977 to 1983 as a school principal at a municipal girls’ high school in Hamapur, Gujarat. He then moved into municipal administration and political roles in Amreli, serving as chief officer of the Amreli municipality from 1983 to 1987.

His formal association with the Bharatiya Janata Party spans several decades. He held district-level party leadership in Amreli, including a term as district president from 1988 to 1991 and later roles as state secretary and state general secretary. He was elected president of the Gujarat state BJP and subsequently served as a national vice-president of the party. Within the BJP he has also carried national responsibilities such as convener of the Kisan Morcha and in-charge assignments for party work in Andhra Pradesh and Goa.

Rupala served three consecutive terms as a member of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly until 2002. During his years in state government he was appointed to cabinet positions: he handled the Narmada portfolio for irrigation and water supply in 1995 and then again later that year into 1996. He served as Agriculture Minister for the Gujarat government from October 2001 to December 2002. He has chaired the Public Accounts Committee and led Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation as its chairman from 1998 to 2001.

At the national level, Rupala has been a Rajya Sabha member representing Gujarat.
