Early life and background

Piyush Vedprakash Goyal was born on 13 June 1964 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Raised in a family active in public life, he attended Don Bosco High School and later studied at Jai Hind College and H.R. College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai. He completed a law degree from the University of Mumbai and also holds a Chartered Accountancy qualification. His parents, Vedprakash Goyal and Chandrakanta Goyal, were both involved in politics.

Career

Goyal joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1984 and built a career that combined finance and public service. Early in his professional life he worked in investment banking and served as a government nominee director on public sector bank boards, including Bank of Baroda (2001–2004) and the State Bank of India (2004–2008).

His formal political responsibilities expanded over time. Between 2002 and 2004 he was a member of a task force on interlinking rivers. In 2010 he became the national treasurer of the BJP and was elected to the Rajya Sabha the same year. From 2012 onward he served on the Rajya Sabha committee responsible for provision of computers to members.

After the 2014 national election, Goyal took on ministerial duty as Minister of State with independent charge for Power, Coal and New & Renewable Energy. During that tenure he oversaw programs aimed at rural electrification and policy initiatives to expand renewable capacity; by April 2017, a large number of villages had been electrified under the initiatives pursued while he held the portfolio. In 2015 he launched the Ujwal DISCOM Assurance Yojana (UDAY) to address the financial stress in distribution companies, and the government’s solar target was raised substantially during this period.

In September 2017 Goyal succeeded Suresh Prabhu as Minister of Railways. Later, in July 2021, he was appointed Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha and was retained by his party in that role. He contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and won the Mumbai North seat with a margin of 3,57,608 votes.
