PR Man Singh Biography
PR Man Singh is a former Indian cricketer and team manager best known for his role with India’s squad during the 1983 Cricket World Cup. A longtime cricket
Early life and backgroundPR Man Singh was born in 1937/38 and hails from Secunderabad in Telangana. He has long been associated with the city and is listed as living in the Karkhana area of Secunderabad. Physically, he is about 1.65 m (5 ft 5 in) tall with dark brown eyes and a bald head.
Career
Man Singh played as a right-handed batsman and bowled right-arm off break. His recorded first-class appearances were limited: he played five matches across competitions including the Ranji Trophy for Hyderabad and the Moin-ud-Dowlah Gold Cup Tournament between 1965 and 1969.
After his playing days he moved into team management and administration. He began working with the Indian team as an assistant manager on the 1978 tour of Pakistan. That tour marked India’s return to Pakistan after about two decades, and he described how he came to serve as deputy to a more senior manager on that trip.
Man Singh went on to manage the Indian team at the Cricket World Cups in 1983 and 1987. He was part of the selection committee that chose Kapil Dev as captain for the 1983 tournament, and he was the only official who accompanied the Indian squad to England for that World Cup. During his tenure as full-time manager he was noted for looking after players’ welfare in ways that were unconventional at the time: he permitted several players to have their wives travel and stay with the team and to use the team bus when traveling to venues outside London.
In domestic cricket administration he served as secretary of the Hyderabad Cricket Association and managed Hyderabad Blues in the Moin-ud-Dowlah Tournament.
Public profile
Man Singh is a devoted collector and chronicler of cricket history. His residence, which he named "Pavilion," houses a large personal collection accumulated since the 1950s: books, ties, bats, mementos, flags, cufflinks, autographed miniature bats and a video archive. Sachin Tendulkar formally inaugurated the Pavilion in 2003.
He also authored a book titled Agony and Ecstasy, for which former India spinner Bishan Singh Bedi contributed a foreword praising Man Singh’s lifelong commitment to the game and his extensive personal museum.
Man Singh has been publicly involved in defending and explaining moments from India’s 1983 World Cup campaign. He challenged versions of events that attributed a lack of television coverage of the India–Zimbabwe match to a BBC strike, explaining that editorial choices and the match venue played a part in coverage decisions.
Recognition and portrayal
He received a commemorative crest from the Bangladesh Cricket Supporters Association in recognition of his contributions. In popular culture, Man Singh was portrayed by actor Pankaj Tripathi in the 2021 Bollywood film ’83, which dramatizes India’s 1983 World Cup victory.
Latest updates
Man Singh’s cricket collection continues to be a prominent part of his public identity. His first recorded book purchase was End of an Innings by Dennis Compton in 1950, and over decades he built a varied archive that has included videotapes later converted to DVDs.
He remains remembered for the managerial role he played during a historic period for Indian cricket, particularly the 1983 World Cup, and for his long-standing ties to Hyderabad’s cricket community.
