Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma Biography

Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma is an Indian politician, social activist and titular head of Tripura’s royal family who founded the Tipra Motha Party after

Early life and background

Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma was born on 4 July 1978 in New Delhi and is connected by upbringing and residence to Agartala, Tripura. He is a member and current head of Tripura’s royal family and is often described by traditional and regional titles. He attended St. Edmund’s College in Shillong. He is Indian by nationality and follows Hinduism.

Pradyot’s family includes his late father, Kirit Bikram Kishore Deb Barman, who served as the 185th ruler of Tripura and was active in politics, and his mother Bibhu Kumari Devi. He has two sisters, Kriti Singh and Kumari Pragya Debbarma, both of whom have been involved in politics. He is unmarried.

Career

Pradyot’s early public life included roles within the Indian National Congress. He served as general secretary of the Indian Youth Congress from 2005 until 2010 and later became president of the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee in February 2015. He also owned and ran a regional news magazine, becoming editor-in-chief of TheNortheastToday in July 2007 and remaining involved with the publication until 2020 as it transitioned to a digital format.

In 2019 Pradyot broke with the Congress party. He resigned from all party posts and from the party itself in September 2019, citing disagreements over state leadership and policy issues. Around that time he launched a social movement organisation, Tipraha Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance (TIPRA), initially formed in response to national policy changes. He then converted TIPRA into a political party, renaming it the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) on 5 February 2021.

Under his leadership TMP allied with the Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura for the 2021 Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections. Pradyot contested the Takarjala-Jampuijala seat, won it in April 2021 with 13,164 votes, and the TMP–INPT coalition captured 18 of 28 seats in the council. In June 2021 several regional parties, including the Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura and the Tipraland State Party, merged with TMP.

Pradyot has mixed roles beyond party politics. He has been described as a social activist and entrepreneur, has chaired the Royal Tripura Foundation which operates a school and organises medical and environmental outreach programs, and in 2015 took ownership of a heritage hotel that was once a royal summer retreat. He also holds part ownership in Shillong-based Lajong Football Club and made a brief on-screen appearance in the Hindi film Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar.

Political positions and public campaigns

Pradyot has been vocal about creating a separate political entity called Greater Tipraland, advocating for tribal rights and political recognition for marginalised communities in Tripura. His demand for a greater homeland has been controversial and contested by other state leaders; he has consistently framed his arguments within constitutional provisions and denied intentions to annex territory from neighbouring states.

He has also been active on issues tied to citizenship laws and state registries. After establishing TIPRA in 2019 he participated in protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act while expressing support for implementation of the National Register of Citizens in Tripura.

Public profile

Pradyot balances roles as a politician, head of a royal family, and social entrepreneur. Observers noted his influence in Tripura politics during the 2023 assembly polls, where media described him as playing a decisive role in outcomes. He led TMP to field candidates broadly across the state in the 2023 elections, though he himself did not stand for the assembly.

He is multilingual, speaking Hindi, English, Bengali, Khasi and Kokborok. Personal interests include music—he plays guitar and collects signed guitars—heavy metal music fandom, and sports including cricket and football. He has a notable fondness for dogs and keeps a large number at his residence; he also owns a small collection of cars and bikes. Physical descriptions in public records list his height at approximately 170 cm, dark brown eyes and salt-and-pepper hair.

Controversies

Public records note at least one high-profile incident in 2018 in which he intervened during the detention of a youth at a police station; a police report and subsequent proceedings were reported at the time. He later said he would submit to lawful process if required.

Latest updates

Since founding TMP, Pradyot has steered the party through local alliances and electoral success at the council level, and has resisted offers from national parties to merge or form pre-election coalitions when he felt assurances for his core political goal of Greater Tipraland were not made in writing. He has described his political commitment as generational, framing his work as aimed at long-term gains for his community rather than short-term positions.

He continues to be active in politics and social initiatives while maintaining a public profile as the titular royal of Tripura and a regional political leader.
