Early life and background

Praful Manoharbhai Patel was born on 17 February 1957 in Nadiad, then part of Bombay State (now in Maharashtra). He completed his schooling at Campion School in Mumbai and went on to earn a B.Com degree from Sydenham College, Mumbai. His family has longstanding roots in public service and education: his father, Manoharbhai Patel, served as an MLA from Gondia and founded the Gondia Education Society, an organisation that runs numerous educational institutions in the Gondia district.

Career

Patel began his public life at the local level, becoming president of the Gondia Municipal Council in 1985. He entered national politics with his election to the 10th Lok Sabha in 1991. During that period he served on parliamentary committees including the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Environment and Forests, the Committee on Science and Technology, and the Committee on Home Affairs.

He was re-elected to the Lok Sabha in 1996 and 1998, and subsequently moved to the Rajya Sabha in 2000 representing Maharashtra. Over the years he has alternated between the two houses: re-elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2006 and 2016, and returning to the Lok Sabha in 2009 for the 15th Lok Sabha. His ministerial responsibilities have included the Ministry of State for Civil Aviation beginning in 2004 and a cabinet portfolio as Minister for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises in 2011.

Outside parliamentary duties, Patel has been active in policy and sectoral reforms. As Civil Aviation Minister he supported raising the foreign direct investment cap in domestic airlines from 40% to 49%. During his term in the heavy industries portfolio he launched projects such as a major solar power initiative near Sambhar Lake and inaugurated an automotive hub in Nagpur.

Business and philanthropy

Alongside his political career Patel has been involved in family business interests. The family historically operated businesses in tobacco and bidi manufacture and expanded into areas such as pharmaceuticals, real estate, packaging and finance. The family’s Ceejay House was among the enterprises he headed. The Gondia Education Society, founded by his father, remains a significant philanthropic and educational endeavour operating institutions across multiple disciplines.

Sports administration

Patel has had a notable role in Indian sports administration, especially football. He became president of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) in October 2009 and was elected unopposed for a third term in 2016. He was a key figure in launching the Indian Super League and later the Indian Women’s League, the inaugural edition of which he launched in January 2017. In December 2016 he was appointed Senior Vice President of the Asian Football Confederation.

Public profile

A senior leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Patel has held various organisational and leadership roles within the party. In June 2023 he was named a working president of the NCP alongside Supriya Sule by party leader Sharad Pawar.

Over his career he has received recognition such as the CAPA award for Aviation Minister of the Year (2005) and an honorary doctorate from Leeds Metropolitan University in 2007. Business and media outlets have described him with accolades such as ‘Reformer of the Year’ from an Indian business publication.

Controversies

Public reports have recorded that Patel faced investigations and allegations related to financial and administrative matters over time. These matters have been covered by multiple news outlets and agencies and include inquiries by enforcement authorities as well as petitions connected to his role in football administration. Patel has publicly denied certain allegations recorded in those reports.

Personal life

Patel married Varsha Patel on 10 February 1977. The couple have four children: a son, Prajay Patel, and three daughters, Poorna, Niyati and Avni. He continues to split his time between residences in Mumbai and New Delhi. His listed hobbies include travelling.

Latest updates

In recent years Patel has remained active in both politics and sports governance. His appointment as one of the NCP’s working presidents in June 2023 reaffirmed his continuing role in party leadership and national public life.
