He was appointed Balaghat district president of the BJYM in 1982 and later served as the organisation’s general secretary in Madhya Pradesh in 1986.

He was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1989 from the Balaghat constituency. Over the next three decades he served multiple terms: re-elected in 1996 and 1999 from Balaghat, elected from Damoh in 2014, and re-elected in 2019. His parliamentary career includes appointment as the BJP parliamentary party whip in the Lok Sabha in 1996 and membership of a range of parliamentary standing and consultative committees, including those for food and civil supplies, urban and rural development, science and technology, environment and forests, and agriculture.
