Early life and background

Prasanth Nair was born in 1986 and raised in Thalassery in the Kannur district of Kerala. He attended Loyola School in Thiruvananthapuram and went on to study law at Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram, affiliated with the University of Kerala. He completed an LLB and began preparing for the civil services early in his college years.

Career

Nair was selected to the Indian Administrative Service in 2006 and was appointed to the Kerala cadre. Over his civil-service career he has worked across several sectors, including taxation, tourism, water supply, roads and skill development. He has held assignments in Kozhikode and served as Private Secretary to K.J. Alphons, the Union Minister of State for Tourism, and later as secretary to the then state home minister Ramesh Chennithala.

While posted as District Collector of Kozhikode between 2015 and 2017, Nair launched a number of locally focused initiatives aimed at improving civic services and social welfare. These included waste-management work at Kozhikode Beach under a campaign called Tere Mere Beach Mein, Operation Sulaimani to address urban hunger, Yo Appooppa to support elderly residents, and a program that offered a free plate of Malabar biryani to volunteers who cleaned a 14-acre pond in Koyilandy. Another notable effort, Compassionate Kozhikode, coordinated help for institutions such as children’s homes, old-age homes and mental-health centres and contributed to his public nickname, Collector Bro.

Beyond district administration, Nair has been involved with World Bank–supported projects, heading assignments identified as KSTP and Jalandhini. He has also worked in roles connected to tourism and public administration outside Kozhikode.

Film and writing

Before joining the service Nair trained as a lawyer, and he has continued to pursue creative interests. He made an acting appearance in Ajay Devaloka’s film Who and directed a film titled Daivakanam, which had its world premiere at the 71st Cannes Film Festival. He is described as an excellent writer who contributes articles in English and Malayalam to regional publications such as Manorama, Malayala Manorama, Kerala Kaumudi, Mathrubhumi and Malayalam Vaarika.
