Early life and backgroundPratap Singh Khachariyawas was born on 16 May 1969 in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. Raised in a family with ties to the Jaipur royal lineage, he spent his early years in the region and lists Danta Ramgarh as his hometown. He completed his schooling at institutions in Jaipur and Kishangarh and went on to study at the University of Rajasthan, where he earned a Master of Arts in political science in 1992 and later obtained an LLB.
Career
Khachariyawas’s political involvement began in student politics. He served as president of the student union at the University of Rajasthan in 1992. After a period with the Bharatiya Janata Party’s youth wing, where he rose to a leadership role, he left the BJP and joined the Indian National Congress on 9 March 2004.
He first contested a parliamentary seat in the 2004 general election from Jaipur on an INC ticket but was defeated. His first successful legislative run came in 2008 when he won the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly seat for Jaipur – Civil Lines. After a defeat in 2013, he reclaimed the Civil Lines seat in the 2018 state elections.
During his time as an MLA he served on multiple assembly committees, including several terms on the Committee on Estimates (’B’) and the Committee on Petitions, as well as a stint on the Committee on Privileges. In the state government led by Ashok Gehlot, Khachariyawas served as Transport and Soldier Welfare Minister from December 2018 until November 2021, when he was reassigned as Cabinet Minister for Food & Civil Supplies Consumer Affairs. He contested the 2023 Rajasthan Legislative Assembly election from Civil Lines but did not retain the seat.

Khachariyawas belongs to a Suryavanshi Rajput family and practices Hinduism. He married Neeraj Kanwar on 28 February 2000. The couple have two sons, Aditya Vardhan Singh Khachariyawas and Krishna Vardhan Singh Khachariyawas. His parents are Laxman Singh Shekhawat and Himmat Kanwar; he has a brother, Karan Singh Khachariyawas, and a sister. His extended family includes his paternal uncle Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, who served as Vice-President of India from 2002 to 2007.
