Pravin Tambe Biography

Pravin Vijay Tambe is an Indian leg‑spin bowler who drew widespread attention for making his Indian Premier League debut at 41. A late bloomer in top-tierT

Early life and background

Pravin Vijay Tambe was born on 8 October 1971 in Mumbai. He grew up in the city, attended a government high school in Mumbai and later studied at Govt PC-College. His parents are Vijay and Jyoti, and he has a brother named Prashant.

As a youngster Tambe originally wanted to be a fast bowler before being encouraged to bowl leg-spin. He developed his game playing local club cricket, including competitions such as the Kanga Cricket League and other club-level fixtures in Mumbai. He also spent time playing club cricket in England in Liverpool and in district competitions.

Career

Tambe’s professional journey is notable for its unusual timing. He was named in a Mumbai Ranji squad in 2000 but did not play then; he later represented Mumbai in the 2013–14 Ranji Trophy. Years of performances in club and league cricket led to his selection by Rajasthan Royals in 2013, and he remained with that franchise through 2015.

His performances in domestic and franchise competitions brought individual honours. In the 2013 Champions League he finished as the leading wicket-taker and received the Golden Wicket Award. During the 2014 Indian Premier League season he claimed a hat-trick against Kolkata Knight Riders on 5 May and earned the match’s player of the match award; he also finished the IPL 2014 tournament as the highest wicket-taker and received the Purple Cap.

Following his stint with Rajasthan, Tambe joined Sunrisers Hyderabad in February 2017 and was bought for 10 lakh rupees. He was later part of the Kolkata Knight Riders squad after the 2020 auction and, in July 2020, joined Trinbago Knight Riders for the Caribbean Premier League. Tambe also appeared in the Vijay Hazare Trophy during the 2016–17 season.

Beyond those appearances, Tambe played in the T10 League and became the first player to take five wickets in a single T10 League season during the competition’s second season in 2021 while representing the Sindhis team.

Public profile

Tambe became widely known as one of cricket’s most experienced debutants when he finally broke into the IPL at 41. His rise from club cricket to international-profile franchise cricket inspired a wider audience and led to a film adaptation of his life.

Kaun Pravin Tambe?, a biopic based on his story, was released on Disney+ Hotstar on 1 April 2022 with actor Shreyas Talpade portraying Tambe. Tambe has spoken about the film as an opportunity to encourage others to pursue their dreams and not underestimate their potential. Shreyas Talpade described preparing for the role as an honour and emphasized the dedication involved in portraying Tambe’s journey.

Tambe runs a cricket academy in Mumbai named the Pravin Tambe Cricket Academy. He is also known to keep active and fit, sharing workout and training updates on his social media.

Latest updates

In 2020 there was controversy around his eligibility for the IPL after participating in the T10 tournament in 2019; he did not follow the Board of Control for Cricket in India policy procedures concerning retirement and re-entry for that season’s auction. Despite administrative complications, Tambe continued to be involved in franchise cricket, including that year’s IPL auction and selection by Kolkata Knight Riders.

Personal life

Pravin Tambe is married and has a son and a daughter. He is Indian by nationality and his zodiac sign is Libra. Physically, he is listed at approximately 1.73 meters (5 feet 8 inches) in height with black hair and black eyes.

Career highlights

Pravin’s most prominent achievements include claiming the Golden Wicket Award in the 2013 Champions League, taking a hat-trick in the IPL on 5 May 2014, finishing as the IPL’s top wicket-taker in 2014 and earning the Purple Cap, and recording a five-wicket haul in the T10 League’s second season in 2021.

Tambe’s path from office and club cricket to high-profile franchise tournaments, and the subsequent cinematic telling of that journey, have made him a recognized figure in Indian cricket as an example of persistence and late success.
