Prem Chopra was born on 23 September 1935 in Lahore, Punjab (now in Pakistan) and grew up in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. He completed his higher education at Panjab University in Chandigarh, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. After graduation he worked as a circulation inspector for the Times of India, overseeing circulation in Bengal, Odisha and Madhya Pradesh, before moving into acting.

Chopra made his film debut in 1960, appearing in the Hindi film Hum Hindustani and the Punjabi film Chaudhary Karnail Singh. Over the decades that followed he became a familiar presence in Indian cinema, performing in both Hindi and Punjabi productions.
