Priyanka Bose (Actress) Biography

Priyanka Bose is an Indian actress and producer from Delhi who has worked across Hindi, regional and international films and in theatre. Trained as a stage

Early life and background

Priyanka Bose was born in Delhi in 1982 and grew up in a middle-class Hindu family. She completed a graduate degree in sociology from the University of Delhi before moving into performing arts. At some point she relocated to Mumbai, where she lives in a flat in Madh Island.

Career

Bose began her career as a theatre performer, gaining recognition for the play Nirbhaya, a piece she has called one of the most important projects of her life. Her stage work led to opportunities in film and advertising, and she has described an interest in working across cultures and languages.

Her earliest onscreen appearance was in a song sequence from Johnny Gaddar (2007). Her feature film debut came with the Hindi film Sorry Bhai! (2008), in which she played the character Shruti. Internationally, she received early acclaim for the Italian film Gangor (2010), a performance that earned her a Best Actress award at the New Jersey Independent South Asian Film Festival.

Over the following years Bose worked in a mix of independent, regional and mainstream projects. She appeared in films including Sold, Oass, Oonga and Gulaab Gang (2014). In 2013 she worked with Konkona Sen Sharma in Shunyo Awnko and that same year gained wide public attention for a Tanishq commercial in which she portrayed a widowed mother who remarries; the advertisement was noted in media coverage for confronting social taboos.

In 2016 Bose featured in the Marathi film Half Ticket, which went on to win the Ecumenical Jury Award at the 57th Zlin International Film Festival in 2017. She also appears in the internationally acclaimed Lion (2016), starring Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman, playing Kamla, the biological mother of the film’s protagonist Saroo Brierley. Further film work includes The MisEducation of Bindu (2018) and Ascharyachakit! (2018), the latter an adaptation of material by Saadat Hasan Manto; reports about that production noted the lengthy process involved in crafting her on-screen look.

Bose has expanded her creative role to producing and runs a small production company called PaapiPet Pictures. She has expressed a desire to be a cross-cultural actor and has worked in English-language projects in addition to her Indian filmography.

Public profile

Physical attributes listed in public profiles include a height of 165 cm (5'5") and a weight of around 54 kg. Her eye colour is brown and her hair is black. Bose is married to singer Paresh Kamath; the couple have a daughter, Naiima, born on 28 January 2009. Publicly available biographical summaries note Delhi as her hometown and Indian nationality.

Bose has been open about the emotional impact of the 2012 Delhi gang rape case, saying it affected her profoundly and influenced her work on the play Nirbhaya. She has also been associated with roles and projects that engage social themes and difficult subject matter.
