Early life and background
Kunwar Ratanjit Pratap Narain Singh was born on 25 April 1964 in New Delhi. He comes from a royal Kurmi Sainthwar family of Padrauna in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh. He attended The Doon School in Dehradun and went on to study history at St. Stephen’s College in New Delhi, completing a B.A. (Hons.) in History.

Career
Singh’s political career began in the 1990s. He won election to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly three times, in 1996, 2002 and 2007, and served as an MLA from 1996 until 2009. Early in his party career he was chosen as president of the Uttar Pradesh Youth Congress (1997–1999) and later served as a secretary of the All India Congress Committee from 2003 to 2006.

In 2009 Singh was elected to the 15th Lok Sabha from the Padrauna constituency as a Congress candidate. He contested the 2014 Lok Sabha election from Padrauna but was defeated. In September 2020 the party entrusted him with additional responsibilities when he was named AICC in-charge for Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh.

After more than three decades with the Indian National Congress, Singh resigned from the party in January 2022 and subsequently joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. At the time of his joining he spoke about beginning a new phase in his political life and expressed his intention to work for nation-building under the BJP leadership.
