Rahul Venkata Chittella was born in Mumbai and celebrates his birthday on 24 September. He grew up in the city that remains his hometown and later pursued formal film training in New York. His nationality is Indian and his zodiac sign is Libra.

Career

Chittella’s career spans producing, writing and directing across short films, anthology work and features. Early in his professional life he joined the non-profit Global Lives Project in India in 2009 as a director and executive producer and subsequently worked with the United Nations Documentary Program in New York.

During the 2010s he contributed to a number of short-fiction projects. He supervised the script for and assisted in the direction of the 2010 short film Door to Door, wrote and directed the 2011 short Muted, and later wrote and directed the anthology Shor Se Shuruaat (2016), a collection of seven short stories. His 2016 short film Azaad received the Best Short Film Award at the Indian Film Festival of Houston in 2017 and was screened by the United Nations at a World Press Freedom Day forum in Jakarta.

Chittella has also worked alongside established filmmakers in production roles. He joined Mirabai Films in Mumbai as a creative producer in September 2010 and assisted Mira Nair on several projects, including The Reluctant Fundamentalist, Words with Gods, Queen of Katwe and the television adaptation of A Suitable Boy.

He moved into feature filmmaking with his debut as a director on Gulmohar (2023), a Hindi family drama released on Disney+ Hotstar. For his work on Gulmohar he received the Best Original Screenplay (Web Original Film) award at the Filmfare OTT Awards in November 2023.

Chittella has also taken on leadership roles within production entities. He became director of Monsoon Indiawaale LLP on 8 June 2019, was appointed director of Cservoe International LLP on 14 October 2019, and assumed a directorship at Autonomous Works LLP on 12 July 2021.
