Early life and backgroundRaima Islam Shimu was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 1976. Raised in the city that remained central to her personal and professional life, she later became known as an actress, film producer and journalist working in the Bangladeshi entertainment industry.
Career
Shimu made her film debut in 1997 with the Bangladeshi movie Bartaman. Over the following years she built a career across films and television, ultimately appearing in more than 25 Bangladeshi feature films. Her last listed film credit is Jamai Svasur, released in 2004.
During her acting career she collaborated with a range of established Bangladeshi directors and worked alongside many popular actors from the industry. In addition to film roles, Shimu performed in television dramas and also produced TV drama content through her production company.
Beyond acting and production, Shimu held a number of business and media roles. She joined the TV news channel ATN Bangla on 29 December 2020 as Vice President of Sales & Marketing. In 2020 she was named CEO of TN Events Ltd., an event management firm. That year she also launched Rose Beauty Salon. On 8 July 2021 she opened a music production studio called SR Production, and she used a YouTube channel under the SR Production Shimu name to share videos of productions; the channel had around 111,000 subscribers as of January 2022.
In 2021 Shimu began work as a journalist for Arthokotha, a national business magazine in Bangladesh. She was also a member of the Bangladesh Film Artists Association.
Public profile
Shimu combined creative work with entrepreneurial activity and media management, which broadened her public profile beyond acting. She produced content, ran business ventures related to events and beauty services, and held an executive role at a broadcast news channel.

Controversy and disappearance
In 2021 reports circulated about a dispute involving Shimu and actor Zayed Khan relating to a film industry association; Zayed Khan publicly denied recent contact and described the reports as a conspiracy against him.
In January 2022 Shimu went missing while working on an acting project in Mawa, Bangladesh. Her brother filed a missing person report after he was unable to reach her. Police carried out a search operation, and on 17 January 2022 investigators recovered her body in a sack near the Hazratpur Bridge in Keraniganj, Dhaka. Initial reports described injury marks on the body and indicated an ongoing investigation; the body was sent to Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
Investigation and arrests
Following the discovery of her body, several people including her husband and her driver were detained. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), an elite anti-crime unit of the Bangladesh Police, later arrested those detainees. In interrogation, Shimu’s husband reportedly confessed and cited ongoing disputes in the marriage as a reason for the crime. Family members made public comments to reporters during the early stages of the investigation; statements included references to arguments within the marriage and observations made by relatives during the period when Shimu disappeared.
Latest updates
Raima Islam Shimu’s body was recovered on 17 January 2022. Authorities described her death as a murder and investigations and legal procedures were underway following the arrests and confessions reported during the inquiry.
