He attended Mahakosal Science College at Rani Durgavati Vishwavidyalaya in Jabalpur, where he began his involvement in student politics. Career
Pateriya built his career in state and national politics as a member of the Indian National Congress. He first entered the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly after winning a by-election for the Hatta constituency around 1991–92. Although he lost the 1993 assembly election from the same seat, he returned to the legislature after winning Hatta again in 1998.
During the Congress government led by Digvijaya Singh (1998–2003), Pateriya held a ministerial portfolio that covered technical education, medical education, and information technology. At the same time he carried responsibilities for the Panna district.
Pateriya later sought to move to national politics. After Hatta became a reserved seat for Scheduled Castes, he contested the Khajuraho Lok Sabha seat in 2009 and again in 2014, but was unsuccessful on both occasions. Following the 2009 defeat he founded the Adivasi–Vanvasi Dalit Mahasangh, an organization focused on the welfare of Adivasi and Scheduled Caste communities.
Within the Congress party, he has served in leadership roles at the state level, including a tenure as vice president of the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee. Ideologically, he is associated with Samajwadi currents and has publicly expressed admiration for leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, B.R. Ambedkar, and Ram Manohar Lohia.
