Rajani Pandit Biography
Rajani Pandit is an Indian private investigator often described as the country’s first female private detective. Over a multi-decade career she built a pan
Early life and backgroundRajani Pandit was born in 1962 in Palghar, Thane, Maharashtra, and grew up in Thane. She completed her college education at D.G. Ruparel College of Arts, Science and Commerce in Matunga, Mumbai, graduating with a degree in Marathi literature. Her father, Shantaram Pandit, worked as a sub-inspector in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID); her mother is Pramila. She has two brothers, Vinod and Dilip, and a sister, Shobha Vaidya. A relative, Aditya Vaidya, is a Marathi actor. Rajani is unmarried and practices Hinduism.
Career
Rajani Pandit began investigating informally while still a college student in the early 1980s. She has described early episodes in which she followed suspicious behaviour among peers and helped expose wrongdoing, experiences that steered her toward investigative work. Her first notable assignments as a practising detective included a difficult double-murder matter in 1980, during which she conducted long undercover work. Over time she developed a repertoire of covert roles — posing as a housemaid, vendor, beggar, or a woman with a disability, among others — to gather intelligence and document cases.
In 1991 she founded Rajani Pandit Detective Services, an agency she ran from locations in Shivaji Park, Mumbai. The agency handled a wide range of assignments across India, including personal, corporate, and employment investigations. Rajani says the agency’s visibility rose after an early television interview on Doordarshan, and she subsequently attracted clients from politics, business and the entertainment industry.
Her agency and professional profile led to broad recognition. She has been described in the press with labels such as the "first lady detective of India" and the "Lady James Bond of India." Over her career she has reportedly handled tens of thousands of cases and received numerous awards; among these is the Doordarshan Hirkani award, given to women for notable achievement in their fields.
Public profile
Rajani authored two Marathi books, Mayajal and Cheharya Adche Chehare (Faces Behind Faces), the latter co-authored with Shilpa Sarpotdar; both works draw on her experiences as a private investigator. Her career also inspired audiovisual projects: a documentary titled Lady James Bond, directed by Dinkar Rao, was released in 2019, and one of her solved cases was represented in the 2020 Tamil film Kuttrapayrichi.
She has spoken publicly about her methods and the practical and ethical challenges of detective work. In interviews and a TEDx talk she recounted cases that brought her early recognition and discussed the blend of improvisation and discipline involved in gathering evidence. Rajani has said she worked part-time as an office clerk after graduation before fully committing to investigative work.
Controversy
In 2018 Rajani Pandit was arrested in connection with an investigation concerning call data records; reports indicate she was taken into custody by Thane police on February 2 and released from Thane Central Jail on March 14 after a period in custody. Reporting around the case included differing characterizations of the materials involved and statements from other investigators about her role. Rajani has commented on the tension between privacy and proof in private investigation work, noting that collecting certain kinds of information has been part of how investigators assemble evidence.
Latest updates
Her life and career remain a subject of public interest: she has given talks recounting early cases and career choices, been profiled in media interviews over the years, and her work continues to be referenced in documentary and film projects. She has said that several well-known actresses could portray her in a cinematic retelling of her life.
