Early life and background

Rajesh Nair was born on 12 August 1978 in Thiruvananthapuram Taluk, Kerala. He grew up in a middle-class family in Thiruvananthapuram and later established long-term ties with East Africa, making Uganda his base since 2000.

Nair completed higher education that spans institutions in Canada, Uganda and the United States. His academic background includes a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science from the University of British Columbia and an Advanced Diploma in Software Engineering from Aptech. He earned an MBA in International Marketing from Makerere University in Kampala and took a one-year course in filmmaking and direction at the New York Film Academy.

Career

Before moving full time into films, Nair spent many years in senior roles within the East African steel industry. He served as CEO and COO of Tembo Steel Limited for eight years and later worked as Chief Marketing Manager at Roofings Limited for six years. These positions preceded a deliberate career shift into the entertainment business nearly a decade ago.

In the entertainment sector Nair has combined business and creative roles. He has been the managing director of Impressario Uganda Limited and has served as franchise holder for Miss India Worldwide in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. He also helped organise Zee Mantra, an Indian lifestyle television event, and for more than ten years has been a director at two production companies, Vaya Films Ltd and Meru Motion Pictures.

Nair made his directorial debut in 2013 with the Malayalam film Escape From Uganda and directed Annum Innum Ennum the same year. He went on to direct Salt Mango Tree (2015), Kalyanam (2018), Thrissur Pooram (2019), Eighteen Hours (2021) and In (2022). His work is not limited to Malayalam cinema: he directed the Bhojpuri film Mahadev Ka Gorakhpur, which received a pan-India release in six languages. Nair has also directed advertising shoots for brands such as Samsung, SABMiller and Chinmaya University.

As a producer, he launched a producing career with the Malayalam film Kalyanam in 2018 and later produced Eighteen Hours (2021) and In (2022). He is credited as a writer on several of his projects, including Escape From Uganda, Annum Innum Ennum and Kalyanam.
