Early life and background

Rajesh Sharma was born on 8 October 1980 in Ludhiana, Punjab. He grew up in the same city and later pursued formal training in acting at the National School of Drama in New Delhi. From an early age he aspired to be an actor and began his onstage journey with theatre work in Kolkata.

Career

Sharma started as a theatre artist with the Rangakarmi group in Kolkata, performing in a number of stage productions. His screen debut in Bengali cinema came with the film Paromitar Ek Din (2000), in which he played the character Rajeev Shrivastav. Over time he became known in Bengali films for several portrayals, including a number of antagonistic roles in titles such as Pratibad (2001), Bombaiyer Bombete (2003), Kranti (2006), Baishe Srabon (2011), Dotara (2018) and Purba Paschim Dakshin (2019).

In Hindi cinema, Sharma's first released film was Parineeta (2005), where he appeared as Ratan. He has since built a steady presence in mainstream Hindi films, appearing in projects like The Dirty Picture (2011), Special 26 (2013), Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015), M. S. Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016), Dream Girl (2019), Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (2022) and Darlings (2022). He has also worked in regional films across other languages: an Odia supporting role in Sakhi Rahila ae Singha Duara (2007), a Punjabi role in Golak Bugni Bank Te Batua (2018) as a money exchanger, and a Tamil appearance in Vada Chennai (2018) as Chanchal.

Sharma's screen work extends to web series and short films. He appeared in the Hindi web series Life Sahi Hai (2018) as a maid agency owner, which streamed on Zee5, and later took roles in series such as Paatal Lok (2020) on Amazon Prime Video, JL50 (2021) on Sony LIV, and Amit Bhadana LLB (2022) on YouTube. In 2020 he played Ravikant Agarwal in the Bengali-Hindi series Kark Rogue on Zee5. His short-film credits include Mirzaa (2017), Armed (2018), Red (2019), Tindey (2019) — for which he received a Filmfare Award for Best Actor — and Almariyaan (2020).

Sharma has also appeared in television and advertising. Early television work included a 1999 appearance in the Star Plus series Star Bestellers in the episode Govind Aur Ganesh. In 2020 he hosted the Bengali TV show Bengal Crime. He has featured in commercials for brands such as Godrej Security Systems, Ferns N Petals and Gintaa.

Public profile

Trained theatre practitioners Usha Ganguly and Aparna Sen are among the mentors he has acknowledged for shaping his craft. While some sources have attributed an earlier Hindi debut to him, Sharma has clarified that although he shot for Khosla Ka Ghosla earlier, his first release was Parineeta. He worked in theatre while supporting himself through other jobs during his early years, and counts Ashish Vidyarthi among his contemporaries from the National School of Drama.

Sharma has expressed particular fondness for certain roles over the years; one he has singled out as a favorite is Titu Mama from Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana (2012). Away from work he enjoys travelling and listening to music.

Latest updates

In recent years Sharma remained active across film and digital platforms, appearing in notable Hindi releases up to 2022 and taking parts in web series and short films. His professional affairs are handled by Shah Entertainment Media, a Mumbai-based management company owned by Sunny Shah. He has been pictured with a personal vehicle, an MG Hector, which he purchased in 2021.
