Early life and background
Rakesh Master was born S. Rama Rao in 1968 in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. His family later moved to Tirupati when his father took a job at the market yard there. From a young age he was drawn to dance, inspired by the film Disco Dancer at around ten years old. He opened a dance school in Tirupati before moving to Madras, where he joined the Union of Dance Masters and began working as an assistant to established choreographers to develop his craft.

Career
Rakesh built a career primarily in the Telugu film industry as a choreographer. He trained under senior figures including Nookaraju Master, Shekhar Master and Johnny Master, and later helped train actors and performers such as Venu Thottempudi, Mani Chandana, Prabhas and Pratyusha. His choreography credits include songs and sequences in films spanning the late 1990s and 2000s, among them titles listed with years such as Ammo Polisollu (1999), Chirunavtu (2000), Lahiri Lahiri Lahirilo (2002), Devdasu (2002) and Seethaiya (2003). Songs noted among his work include numbers from Lahiri Lahiri Lahirilo and material from Devadasu, and he is credited with choreographing a sequence titled Vendi theraku Maa Vandanalu from Manasichanu.

Beyond film, Rakesh appeared regularly on Telugu television. He contributed to the dance-mentoring format on the show Dhee, where he worked with young performers, and he was part of episodes of the comedy program Jabardasth. He also worked in Kannada cinema as an actor, appearing in the 2011 film Avva in the role of Kariya.

Public profile
Rakesh was known for both his influence as a teacher and for contentious public statements later in his life. He spoke in interviews about his role in mentoring students—charging modest fees to teach—and he described a close, formative relationship with some of his trainees. At the same time he drew criticism and faced legal complaints after remarks about religious figures in 2021; those remarks led to a criminal complaint and related police matters. In 2023, allegations of harassment by several women prompted further public complaints and calls for official action.

Personal life and death
Rakesh was married at the time of his death to Lakshmi; records indicate he had been married twice prior to that marriage. He had a son named Charan Tej. His father’s name was Balireddy, and he had siblings including two brothers and four sisters. Physically, his height is listed at approximately 170 cm (5 ft 7 in). He had tattoos on his hands, legs, chest and head.

Rakesh suffered health problems after returning to Hyderabad from an outdoor shoot in Visakhapatnam. He was admitted to Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad and, after about a week of illness, died on 18 June 2023 at age 55. Hospital reports indicate he experienced multi-organ failure; he had been diagnosed with diabetes and severe metabolic acidosis and was dehydrated following sun exposure. Medical staff noted that his condition deteriorated rapidly after admission and that he died despite supportive measures.

Legacy and recognition
Colleagues and contemporaries in the choreography community remembered Rakesh as a teacher who nurtured many students who went on to work in the industry. He received a doctorate from the Global Human Peace University in 2020 in recognition of his work in the service sector. Peers in Tollywood acknowledged his contributions and discussed ways to support his family following his death.

Latest updates
Rakesh’s passing in June 2023 brought renewed attention to both his professional contributions and the controversies that marked his later public life. Discussions among choreographers and former students about his influence and support for his family were reported in the wake of his death.
