Early life and backgroundRam Chandra Poudel was born on 14 October 1944 in Satiswara village, Bahunpokhari, in the Tanahun district of Nepal. He grew up in a family headed by Durga Prasad Poudel and Rishi Maya Poudel and has four younger sisters. Poudel completed his higher education at Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu, earning a Sastri (bachelor’s) degree in Sanskrit literature in 1967 and a master’s degree in Nepali language in 1970.
Poudel entered politics as a teenager, becoming active in student movements and democratic activism in the 1960s. He held student leadership posts including the presidency of Saraswati College Student Union and founding roles in campus-level organizations, and he founded the Nepal Student Union in 1970.
Career
Poudel’s public life has been defined by steady progression through party and state roles. He began building his party credentials in the 1970s with positions in the Nepali Congress Tanahun District Committee, moving from member to vice president and later to district-level leadership of multi-party campaigning efforts.
Through the 1980s and 1990s he took on national-level communications and publicity responsibilities for the Nepali Congress, including coordinator and later president of the party’s publicity bodies. He won his first parliamentary seat from Tanahun Constituency No. 1 in 1991 and was appointed Minister for Local Development and Agriculture that same year, serving until 1994.
Poudel continued to represent Tanahun in successive parliaments. In December 1994 he was elected speaker of the lower house (Pratinidhi Sabha), a post he held until March 1999. In 1999 he served as Deputy Prime Minister with responsibility for Home and Communications and remained active in parliamentary politics through the early 2000s.
During the mid-2000s he took on organisational leadership within the Nepali Congress, including general secretary of the party’s central committee and coordinator of its Peace Secretariat. He served as Minister for Peace and Reconstruction from 2007 to 2008 and later as vice president of the party’s central committee.
Poudel was repeatedly returned to the House of Representatives from Tanahun Constituency No. 2 in several elections, and in June 2009 he became the Nepali Congress parliamentary party leader. He remained a prominent figure in party leadership and parliamentary affairs through the 2010s and into the 2020s.
In the national presidential contest held in March 2023, Poudel was elected the third President of Nepal. He succeeded Bidya Devi Bhandari after securing a majority of votes from members of parliament and provincial assemblies.
