Early life and backgroundRam Gopal Yadav was born on 29 June 1946 in Saifai, Etawah, Uttar Pradesh. He completed postgraduate studies in physics, earning an M.Sc. from Agra University in 1969, and later a PhD from Kanpur University in 1993. Raised in a family with roots in the region, his parents are Bachchi Lal and Phoolwati, and he has a sister named Geeta Yadav.
Before entering full-time public life, Yadav worked in education. He began as a lecturer in physics at K. K. College in Etawah in 1969 and went on to serve as principal of Chaudhary Charan Singh Post Graduate College in Heonra, Saifai, a position he held from 1994 until 2006.

Ram Gopal Yadav’s political life has been closely linked with the Samajwadi Party. His early elected office was as chairman of the Zila Parishad in Etawah from 1989 to 1992. He won election to the Rajya Sabha and served two terms from 1992 to 2004. In 2004 he was elected to the 14th Lok Sabha.
