Early life and backgroundRamchandra Prasad Singh was born on 6 July 1958 in Mustafapur, Nalanda district, Bihar. He grew up in the same area and completed his schooling at Choudhary High School, Nalanda. He earned a B.A. (Hons.) in History from Patna University and went on to complete an M.A. in International Relations at Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi.
Before entering politics he served in the Indian Administrative Service after being selected in the 1984 batch and was allotted the Uttar Pradesh cadre. His early administrative postings included roles such as Joint Magistrate in Sultanpur and Sub Divisional Magistrate in Khalilabad. Over the course of his bureaucratic career he held several district-level leadership positions and responsibilities in development and industry-related offices.
Career
In the Uttar Pradesh cadre Singh worked in a number of on-ground administrative roles: he served as General Manager of the UP Handloom Corporation, Chief Development Officer in Kanpur (Nagar and Dehat), and as Collector and District Magistrate in Rampur, Hamirpur, Barabanki and Fatehpur. He also took on specialized appointments including Additional CEO of the Greater Noida Authority and several private secretary positions at the centre.
During his time in government service he was private secretary to Beni Prasad Verma when Verma was Union Minister of Post and Telecom. He later served as private secretary to Nitish Kumar during periods when Kumar held portfolios including Railways, Surface Transport and Agriculture. At the state level he was Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in Bihar.
Singh took voluntary retirement from the IAS in 2010 and moved into active politics the same year. He joined Janata Dal (United) and was elected to the Rajya Sabha in June 2010. In Parliament he served on consultative and standing committees, including assignments related to railways, external affairs and home affairs.
Within his party he rose through organisational ranks, holding the post of general secretary and later serving as national general secretary (organization). In early 2021 he was elevated to the national presidency of Janata Dal (United). On 7 July 2021 he was sworn in as Union Minister of Steel in the government formed after the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and subsequent cabinet changes.
